Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail Ignites

Backstage was an organized hurricane of tulle, silk, shouting directors, and hurried makeup brushes. Models towering on six-inch heels glided past like majestic cranes, their faces painted in gilded geometric patterns for Celeste’s *Resurgence* collection. Yet despite the frantic kinetic energy of fifty people preparing for a global broadcast, an aisle of deference opened up the moment Celeste led me through the black velvet partitions.

"Breathe, *ma chérie*," Celeste murmured, her sharp eyes scanning my face as she pulled me into a private dressing alcove lined with rolling racks of silk taffeta. "You held your spine like a queen out there. But the war has only fired its first cannon."

"I don't plan on losing," I said quietly, though my heart was still hammering against my ribs like a caged bird.

Julian Vance slipped into the alcove behind us, smoothly pulling the black curtain shut. He opened his leather briefcase on a vanity table, setting down the laminated property registration documents alongside a thick, bound dossier.

"Detective Mercer has the necklace secured in the precinct vault under chain of custody," Julian said, his calm, clinical tone acting like an anchor in the storm. "Vanessa Hart is currently being questioned in an auxiliary holding room at the venue. Adrian’s corporate counsel has already tried to call my office three times in the last eight minutes. They know the video is already everywhere."

"How bad is it?" I asked.

Julian offered a thin, razor-sharp smile as he handed me his tablet. "Take a look for yourself."

The internet was in an absolute frenzy. On TikTok, the hashtag #ClaireVale had amassed four million views in less than twenty minutes. The video of Adrian stepping backward, abandoning Vanessa to the police while Celeste Moreau called me her muse, was the number-one trending topic across all platforms. Gossip blogs that had spent the past three months mocking my silence, questioning why the "dowdy socialite" couldn't keep her dashing husband home, were now rapidly deleting their old articles and publishing breathless breaking-news updates.

"Public sentiment has shifted entirely in your favor," Julian noted, adjusting his tortoiseshell glasses. "The narrative is no longer about a discarded wife. It is about an untouchable heiress reclaiming what was stolen from her. But public sympathy doesn't win board meetings, Claire. Tomorrow morning, Adrian will try to freeze the Vale liquid reserves."

"He can’t," I said, looking at my reflection in the makeup mirror.

My dark hair was pulled into a sleek, severe chignon. My skin was pale, but my eyes—green, the exact shade of the emeralds my mother had left me—were clear and dry. For years, I had softened myself for Adrian. I had worn pastels because he thought they looked non-threatening; I had kept my opinions quiet during his high-stakes negotiations so he could feel like the singular titan in the room. I had allowed the world to believe that Adrian Sterling had built an empire from scratch, when in truth, every foundational stone of his company had been paid for by the Vale trust.

"He doesn't know about the clause," I said, looking back at Julian.

"The morality stipulation in the 2018 recapitalization agreement," Julian confirmed, nodding slowly. "Section 14B. If either party engages in public conduct that severely prejudices the financial stability or moral standing of the joint ventures, the primary guarantor reserves the right to trigger an immediate, non-negotiable buyback of all voting shares at book value."

"And grand grand larceny on a live international fashion broadcast certainly qualifies as prejudicial conduct," Celeste added, lighting a thin cigarette despite the venue's strict no-smoking policy. She blew a silver plume toward the high ceiling. "He played with fire because he thought you were made of porcelain, Claire. He forgot that porcelain is forged in an oven."

Suddenly, the dressing curtain was violently yanked aside.

Adrian stood in the threshold, disheveled, his silk tie loosened, his forehead slick with sweat. His personal security team was hovering awkwardly behind him, clearly unwilling to physically challenge Celeste’s guards who stood watch outside.

"Claire," Adrian breathed, his chest heaving. He stepped into the room, his eyes darting between Julian and Celeste before landing squarely on me. "We need to talk. Right now. In private."

"Mr. Sterling," Julian said, instantly standing to bar his path. "You have been formally served with a petition for the dissolution of marriage as of 10:03 AM yesterday. All communication must go through my office."

"Get out of my way, Vance," Adrian growled, his voice dropping into that predatory, commanding growl he used to intimidate business rivals. "This is between my wife and me."

"I am not your wife, Adrian," I said, turning on my swivel chair to face him directly. "I am your primary creditor."

Adrian stopped in his tracks, blinking as if struck. "What did you say?"

"You heard me," I said, standing up. I was wearing four-inch obsidian heels; for the first time in years, I didn't stoop to make him appear taller. Our eyes met at an even level. "You thought my silence was weakness. You thought that while you were parading that child around Milan, buying her penthouses with corporate line-of-credit cards, and letting her flaunt my mother's heirlooms on the internet, I was crying into my pillow."

"Claire, listen to me—the necklace was a mistake," Adrian stammered, his arrogance suddenly splintering into desperate excuses. "Vanessa found the safe open. She took it without my knowledge! I didn't give it to her. I swear to you, I would never—"

"Save the perjury for your deposition," I cut in, my voice icy. "I have the security footage from our penthouse dressing room. I have the time-stamped footage of *you* opening the safe, placing the velvet box into your briefcase, and leaving at 7:15 AM on Tuesday. You handed it to her in the lobby of the Baccarat Hotel an hour later. My private investigator was sitting two tables away having an espresso."

Adrian’s mouth fell open. He looked at me as if looking at a stranger, completely unable to reconcile the docile woman who used to pour his morning coffee with the cold strategist standing before him.

"You spied on me?" he whispered, attempting to inject indignation into his voice.

"I audited you," I corrected. "There is a difference. When you manage an asset that has become toxic, you prepare for liquidation."

Julian stepped forward, pulling a heavy document bound in blue cardstock from his briefcase. He held it out toward Adrian.

"Notice of Emergency Shareholder Assembly," Julian announced with formal precision. "To be convened tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM at the Sterling Tower boardroom. As representative of the Vale Trust, Mrs. Sterling will be invoking Section 14B. You are advised to bring your personal legal counsel, Mr. Sterling. You will not be leaving that room with your chief executive title."

Adrian stared at the blue document as if it were a venomous snake. His hands began to tremble slightly at his sides.

"You can't do this, Claire," he hissed, his eyes wild with a mixture of terror and fury. "I built the Sterling Group! My name is on the building! Without me, those investors will pull out by noon!"

"Your name is on the building because my father bought the land it sits on," I said evenly. "And as for the investors? They aren't loyal to you, Adrian. They are loyal to money. And they know that tomorrow morning, the only person with money left in this marriage is me."

I turned my back on him and looked to Celeste. "Is the final look ready?"

Celeste smiled—a slow, triumphant grin. "It has been waiting for you all evening."

May you like

"Get out of my dressing room, Adrian," I said without looking back. "You have a board meeting to prepare for. And a mistress to bail out of jail."
