Chapter 10 - An Open Horizon

The party continued long into the twilight hours, until the lanterns strung through the ancient oaks flickered against the deepening indigo sky.
Eventually, I slipped away from the music and the toasts, walking down the stone pathways toward the estate’s private conservatory.
The glass pavilion was filled with my mother’s favorite white orchids, their delicate petals glowing softly in the moonlight. The air smelled of damp earth, sweet jasmine, and rain.
I walked to the center of the conservatory, where a bronze bust of my mother, Eleanor Vale, rested on a plinth surrounded by climbing ivy.
I reached up with both hands, touched the seven square-cut emeralds resting against my neck, and felt the smooth, cold platinum settings beneath my fingertips.
*“Never make an accusation you cannot prove. Facts do not need to shout.”*
Her voice echoed in my memory, not with sorrow, but with the steady, quiet triumph of a promise kept.
"I kept them safe, Mother," I whispered into the quiet garden. "And I kept myself safe, too."
Footsteps clicked softly against the flagstone pathway behind me.
I didn't turn around immediately, recognizing the steady, respectful cadence of the approach.
Matteo stopped a few paces behind me, giving me space, respecting the sanctity of the moment.
"Celeste is looking for you," he said softly, his voice warm in the quiet conservatory. "She says the French Minister of Culture wants to toast the new artisan residency program in Paris. But she told him he would have to wait until the queen returned to the room."
I smiled, turning to face him.
The moonlight filtered through the glass panes above, illuminating Matteo’s sharp, handsome features. There was no arrogance in his eyes, no hunger for control, no hidden agenda waiting to be unmasked. There was only admiration, respect, and a quiet, patient affection that asked for nothing more than what I was ready to give.
"I’m done being a queen in someone else’s kingdom, Matteo," I said, stepping toward him.
"Good," Matteo replied, offering me his hand with an open, inviting smile. "Because Paris is waiting. The world is waiting. And this time, Claire... you get to write the rules."
I looked down at his outstretched hand, then back up into his eyes.
For ten years, I had lived in fear of what I might lose if I stepped into my own power. I had made myself small so that an insecure man could feel large. I had stayed silent so that a fragile marriage would not break.
Now, the marriage was gone. The man was in a cell. The emeralds were home.
And the horizon before me was vast, unwritten, and entirely mine.
May you like
I placed my hand into Matteo’s, feeling the warm, solid strength of his fingers close gently around mine.
Together, we walked out of the conservatory and back toward the music, the light, and the boundless, beautiful future waiting to unfold.
