Chapter 9 - The Final Purge

Pier 7 was the darkest corner of the Busan harbor. Heavy rain lashed against the rusted shipping containers as fog rolled off the freezing sea.

Han Seol-ah sat in a wheelchair inside an abandoned warehouse, both of her legs heavily bandaged, her face pale and sunken with fever. Surrounding her were the remnants of her traitorous faction—twenty Russian mercenaries armed with Kalashnikovs, guarding two million dollars in laundered cash meant to secure their escape to Vladivostok.

"Where is the cargo boat?!" Seol-ah screamed at her lieutenant. "The storm is getting worse! If we don't leave tonight, the Avanoir syndicate will hunt us down!"

"The boat is ten minutes out, Miss Han," the guard replied, nervously watching the perimeter.

Suddenly, the warehouse’s corrugated metal roof groaned.

A single red laser dot appeared on the guard's forehead.

Before he could scream, the crack of a suppressed sniper rifle shattered the silence. The guard collapsed, blood staining the concrete.

The warehouse floodlights suddenly flared with blinding, white intensity.

Standing at the main entrance, cutting through the swirling rain and fog, were two figures.

Dante Avanoir stood tall, his shoulder heavily bandaged beneath an immaculate black wool coat, his lethal amber eyes scanning the traitors like an executioner at the gallows. And beside him, carrying a high-caliber combat shotgun resting casually against her shoulder, was Nyla.

"Dante..." Seol-ah gasped in pure horror, clawing at the arms of her wheelchair. "You're alive... How are you alive?!"

"My wife didn't give me permission to die," Dante said, his voice echoing through the hollow cavern of the warehouse like a death toll.

"Kill them!" Seol-ah shrieked. "Kill them both!"

The mercenaries raised their weapons, but they were already in the kill zone.

From the rafters and shipping containers, Dante’s elite commandos opened fire. A synchronized, terrifying massacre unfolded. Within ninety seconds, the gunfire ceased. The mercenaries lay motionless on the wet concrete.

The silence returned, broken only by the patter of heavy rain and the rhythmic tapping of Nyla’s heels.

Dante and Nyla walked forward together until they stopped five feet from Han Seol-ah’s wheelchair.

Seol-ah was sobbing, shaking violently, her beauty completely erased by terror. "Dante... please. We were partners. You loved me once—"

"I never looked at you," Dante replied, his voice dead and devoid of emotion. "You were a snake I allowed in my garden until I found the nest. And now the nest is burned."

Dante looked at Nyla, stepping back slightly, offering her the stage. In the mafia underworld, this was the ultimate gesture of submission: the Boss yielding the right of execution to his Queen.

Nyla looked down at the woman who had tried to steal her life, her husband, and her family's honor.

"You told me on my wedding night that I was a fragile toy," Nyla said softly, leveling the shotgun directly at the cash containers behind Seol-ah. "You were wrong about many things, Han Seol-ah. But your biggest mistake was believing that Dante was the dangerous one."

Nyla pulled the trigger.

The blast shredded the cash crates, sending millions of dollars of traitorous money exploding into flames and sea-spray.

Nyla lowered the weapon and turned to Tae-oh, who waited in the shadows. "Call the maritime police. Inform them that the international fugitive Han Seol-ah has been apprehended and confessed to high treason and maritime smuggling. Let her spend the rest of her life in an underground cell thinking about the flat champagne."

Seol-ah screamed, thrashing against her wheelchair as Tae-oh’s men dragged her away into the pouring rain.

Dante stepped beside Nyla. He wrapped his uninjured arm around her waist, pulling her back against his chest as the fire from the destroyed cargo illuminated their faces.

"Merciful, my queen," Dante murmured, kissing the damp hair at her temple.

May you like

"Not merciful," Nyla whispered, smiling up at him in the darkness. "Cruel. She will live knowing I won everything she died trying to steal."
