Chapter 3 - Poison in the Champagne

The Grand Ballroom of the Haeundae Maritime Exchange was bathed in crystal light. By 11:30 AM, the city's elite had assembled—syndicate lords draped in Italian wool, corrupt politicians, foreign investors, and the predatory press. Today was the ceremonial ratification of the Avanoir-Vane maritime merger.

Everyone expected Nyla to appear as the weeping, sheltered bride or not at all. Rumors had already begun rippling through the underworld that Dante had spent the early morning hours leaving a luxury high-rise in Cheongdam-dong—Han Seol-ah’s residence.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

The murmur in the hall ceased instantly.

Dante Avanoir strode in, looking lethal and pristine in a midnight-blue three-piece suit. But he was not alone. At his side, her arm linked securely through his, was Nyla.

She did not wear ivory. She had shed the bridal silk like a snake shedding its skin. She wore a tailored scarlet dress that hugged every curve of her frame, high-necked and backless, complemented by a choker of raw black diamonds. Her dark hair was swept into an intricate updo, exposing the flawless, porcelain line of her neck. Her red lips were painted in blood-dark crimson.

She did not walk behind Dante. She walked in perfect, synchronized cadence with him, her chin held high, her emerald eyes scanning the room with the imperious scrutiny of an empress inspecting her vassals.

Whispers exploded through the room.

"Look at her..."

"Is that the quiet painter?"

"She looks like she could slit a throat with her smile."

Dante felt the burning weight of her presence at his side. Beneath the fabric of his sleeve, he could feel the calm, steady pressure of her fingers. Not trembling. Not seeking reassurance. Anchoring him to the ground while silently holding a knife to his ribs.

"You look stunning, wife," Dante murmured under his breath, barely moving his lips as they approached the head table.

"Save your compliments for your mistress, Dante," Nyla replied without shifting her gaze from the crowd. "She’ll need them today."

At that moment, a woman parted the sea of guests.

Han Seol-ah stepped into the aisle. She wore a shimmering champagne gown that was borderline bridal, clearly intended to mock the wedding that had occurred the night before. Her face was breathtakingly sculpted, her demeanor radiating smug triumph. In her hand, she held two glasses of vintage Dom Pérignon.

"Dante," Seol-ah purred, ignoring Nyla entirely as she stepped directly into their path. "Congratulations on the ratification. It seems your sleepless night was well worth the effort."

The room fell dead silent. The double entendre was an open slap across Nyla's face, staged before thirty syndicate bosses.

Dante’s eyes narrowed dangerously. "Seol-ah. Step back."

Seol-ah smiled, turning her gaze toward Nyla with mock pity. "Oh, forgive me, Mrs. Avanoir. I didn't see you there. Dante was telling me only a few hours ago how delicate your nerves are. I do hope the pressure of the underworld doesn't crush your fragile sensibilities."

She extended a glass of champagne toward Nyla, her eyes gleaming with triumphant malice. "A toast to the bride. May you last longer than Dante's previous toys."

The air in the ballroom went brittle. Several syndicate leaders held their breath, waiting for the young heiress to burst into tears or flee the room.

Nyla did neither.

She looked at the glass of champagne. Then she looked Seol-ah in the eyes, her gaze so cold, so profoundly ancient and detached that the smile on Seol-ah’s face began to falter.

Nyla didn't take the glass.

Instead, she took one deliberate step closer to Seol-ah. With lightning speed and terrifying grace, Nyla reached out and took the glass from Seol-ah's hand. But she didn't drink.

She turned the glass upside down.

The vintage champagne poured directly over Han Seol-ah’s designer diamond-encrusted heels, splashing golden foam across the hem of her champagne gown.

A collective gasp echoed across the room.

"You insolent—!" Seol-ah hissed, stumbling backward in horror.

"The champagne is flat," Nyla said, her voice carrying through the acoustic vault of the ballroom, clear, sharp, and ringing with absolute authority. "Just like your ambition, Miss Han. You were summoned here as an art appraiser, not a courtesan. If you spill your cheap perfume on my husband’s floor again, I will have the port authorities revoke your gallery’s import licenses by sundown."

Seol-ah turned pale with rage, looking frantically at Dante. "Dante! Are you going to let her speak to me like this?!"

Dante stared at Nyla. For the first time in his life, the ruthless king of Busan was completely mesmerized. His chest burned with an intoxicating, wild thrill he had never experienced before.

He turned his gaze slowly to Seol-ah. His voice was ice.

May you like

"Apologize to my wife," Dante said. "And leave the hall."
