Chapter 4 - The Vault of Secrets

The aftermath of the public confrontation sent shockwaves through the Syndicate. In one morning, Nyla had altered the narrative of the city: she was no longer Dante Avanoir’s decorative bride; she was an unpredictable queen who had publicly humiliated his most favored associate.

At midnight, the lower level of the Avanoir coastal estate was silent.

The subterranean level was carved out of sea-rock, a fortress beneath the cliffside mansion where centuries of nautical relics and contraband were stored. Nyla moved through the dim corridors, wearing a black silk robe, carrying a bronze master key she had extracted from her father’s antique watch.

Her father had left her a puzzle. In the final letter he wrote before his stroke, he had said: *“When the wolf comes for the door, Nyla, remember that the true fleet is not in the water. It is beneath the stone.”*

She reached the iron vault door marked with her family’s crest: an anchor wrapped in thorned vines. She inserted the key, turned it twice to the left, once to the right, and entered a six-digit cipher based on the restoration formula of Caravaggio’s *The Taking of Christ*.

The heavy iron mechanism ground open with a deep, echoing groan.

Inside was a circular stone chamber illuminated by emergency halogen strips. But it wasn't gold or bullion that filled the shelves.

It was ledgers. Hundreds of black-bound ledgers containing every covert transaction of the East Asian black market for the past forty years—blackmail files, naval defense blueprints, and most importantly, the secret financial pipeline of the Han family cartel.

Nyla pulled a file from the central desk. As she opened it, her blood turned cold.

Han Seol-ah was not merely an art broker or a mistress. The Han syndicate was a front for the Russian Vor operating out of Vladivostok. They had been systematically poisoning the Avanoir trade routes from within.

And more terrifyingly: Dante knew.

"You shouldn't be down here," a deep, rough voice echoed from the iron threshold.

Nyla didn't jump. She turned slowly.

Dante was leaning against the steel doorframe, his white shirt unbuttoned halfway down his chest, a glass of amber scotch in his right hand. The shadows carved his jawline into severe, menacing angles. His dark eyes were fixed on her with predatory intensity.

"Why is Han Seol-ah's treason documented in my father’s vault?" Nyla asked, holding the black ledger in the air. "You didn't keep her because you loved her, Dante. You kept her because she was your leash on the Vladivostok faction."

Dante pushed off the wall and walked slowly toward her. The air grew impossibly thick with every step he took. The raw masculinity and danger rolling off him made Nyla’s heart pound against her ribs.

"You're too smart for your own good, Nyla," Dante said quietly, stopping inches before her. He set his scotch glass on the steel table. "Three years ago, your father came to me. He was dying. He knew the Han cartel was preparing to assassinate him and seize the deep-water tunnels. He asked me to protect the only thing he cared about."

Nyla's breath caught. "What?"

"You," Dante whispered, stepping into her personal space. His hand rose, his fingers curling gently around the nape of her neck, tilting her head back. His thumb swept across her lower lip, his touch burning like a brand. "He knew you were pure. He knew you were an artist who lived in a world of beauty, untouched by our filth. He made me swear an oath: marry you, secure the bloodline rights so the Han syndicate couldn't touch them, and eliminate the traitors from the inside."

"You lied to me," Nyla whispered, her eyes searching his dark, unreadable face. "You let me believe you spent last night in her bed."

Dante leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, his deep voice vibrating straight into her soul. "I spent last night in her high-rise breaking the encryption on their weapons shipment, Nyla. I have never touched Han Seol-ah. Not four years ago. Not last night. Not ever."

Nyla felt the room spin. The scent of cedarwood, smoke, and pure leather enveloped her. "Then why the messages? Why let me see that tablet?"

Dante’s hand gripped her waist, pulling her flush against his hard body. "Because I was a coward," he confessed in a low, savage growl. "I saw how you looked at me before the wedding. You looked at me like I was a hero. But I'm a monster, Nyla. I've killed men with my bare hands. I thought if you hated me, you would be safe from me. I thought if you despised me, you wouldn't let me ruin you."

His amber eyes burned into hers with an intensity that terrified her.

"I was wrong," Dante whispered, his voice shaking with raw, unchecked hunger. "Because when you stood in that ballroom today and drowned that woman in champagne, I realized you were never a fragile bird. You are my queen. And I have never wanted a woman more in my life."

Before Nyla could speak, his mouth crashed down onto hers.
