Chapter 55 - The Midnight Counter-Strike

The waters beneath Berth Nine were ink-black and frigid.
We cut through the harbor depths aboard a miniature tactical submersible—a vessel Silas had hidden in an underwater submarine pen beneath Berth Nine for years. Miller was at the helm, navigating through the underwater sensor nets, while Silas checked the charges of C4 strapped to his combat harness.
Up above, through the thick quartz glass of the submersible's dome, the hulls of the Consortium's destroyers looked like colossal steel whales suspended in the gloom.
"The *Archon* is positioned directly over the main shipping channel," Miller reported, his fingers dancing across the green sonar terminal. "Helena von Berg is coordinating the blockade from the forward bridge. If we disable the flagship’s tactical command network, the other seven ships will lose autonomous targeting."
"They won't just lose targeting," Silas said coldly, sliding a silencer onto his pistol. "They’ll be dead in the water. Elena."
I looked up from where Clara lay sleeping on the auxiliary bench, worn out from terror and tears.
Silas reached into his vest and pulled out a heavy titanium ring inscribed with ancient maritime coordinates and the Marcone crest. He took my left hand and slid the ring onto my thumb. It was heavy, cold, and carried the weight of an empire.
"If I don't come back down to this sub in thirty minutes," Silas said, holding my gaze with unyielding intensity, "Miller has orders to take you and Clara down the coast to an isolated airfield in the Carolinas. This ring unlocks my private reserves in Zurich—funds that Helena’s consortium can never touch. You will be safe. You will be free."
My heart squeezed so hard it felt like it would tear inside my chest.
"Don't you dare talk like you're leaving us," I said, my voice fiercely steady. I grabbed the front of his vest and pulled him down until our lips were inches apart. "You started this the day you knocked that bastard unconscious in my diner. You brought me into your world. You don't get to leave me now, Silas Marcone. You come back to this boat."
Silas stared at me for a heartbeat. Then, he grabbed the back of my neck, pulled me in, and kissed me with a brutal, desperate hunger that tasted of copper, smoke, and promises etched in iron.
"Thirty minutes," he whispered against my lips.

Then he hit the decompression seal and stepped into the dive chamber.
