Chapter 32 - The Iron Perimeter

The roar of the customized twin turbines shook the glass panes of the bridge as Matteo threw the throttle full forward. *The Sovereign Queen* surged ahead, slicing through the grey waters of the Lower Bay, kicking up a white rooster tail of spray that veiled our wake.
Out on the horizon, the five black destroyers did not maneuver like standard warships; they moved like a pack of starving wolves herding an injured elk. Their hulls were coated in matte-black, radar-absorbent paint, devoid of any national ensign. These were the private navy of the global elite—mercenaries funded by offshore shadow trusts.
"They're not firing heavy ordnance," Silas noted, picking up a backup pair of high-magnification scopes from the console. His eyes scanned the lead warship. "If they wanted to sink us, we’d already be underwater. They want Clara intact. That gives us leverage."
"Leverage doesn't stop fifty-caliber rounds, boss!" Matteo shouted over the screaming engines, wrestling the wheel as two high-speed tactical skiffs detached from the sides of the nearest destroyer, hitting the water at fifty knots.
"Elena, take Clara down to the engine trench," Silas ordered without looking back, his fingers already working the bolt of an assault rifle he pulled from the concealed locker beneath the helm. "The bulkhead is lined with double-layered Kevlar. Lock the hatch from inside. Do not open it for anyone unless you hear my knock: three slow, two fast."
"I am not hiding like a scared animal while you take on an army alone," I said, my voice shaking with fury, not fear. I reached into the locker, ignoring the sharp sting of my bruised hands, and racked the slide of a matte-black sidearm Silas had taught me to use during the siege at Berth Nine. "They want my daughter, Silas. If they come on this deck, they die."
Silas turned his head. In the dim amber glow of the cockpit monitors, his dark eyes flared with an unyielding mixture of fierce pride and savage devotion. He stepped forward, cupped the back of my neck with his calloused palm, and pulled my forehead firmly against his.
"I love you, Elena," he muttered, his breath warm against my trembling skin. "Keep her safe. Let me do what I was built for."
Before I could reply, the deafening rattle of heavy machine-gun fire tore through the stern deck. Teak splinters erupted into the air, and the glass of the aft observation lounge shattered in a hail of diamond-sharp shards.
Clara awoke with a piercing cry, her arms instinctively wrapping around my neck. "Mommy! Mommy, what’s that noise?!"
"Hold on to me, baby," I whispered fiercely, lifting her into my arms and sprinting toward the reinforced steel hatch leading into the belly of the vessel. "Mommy and Silas are going to protect you. Close your eyes. Don't look back."

As the heavy steel hatch slammed shut behind us and I spun the locking wheel, the muffled sound of Silas's rifle opened up above—a continuous, rhythmic roar of defiance against an impossible enemy.
