Chapter 26 - The Mother’s Fury

Two hours before dawn, the rain over New York Harbor had turned into a full-scale nor'easter. Waves crashed against the stone breakwaters with tremendous violence, churning the dark Atlantic water into froth.

Aboard Silas’s eighty-foot reinforced vessel, *The Sovereign Queen*, the engine thrummed like a steady heartbeat. Silas sat across from me in the lower galley, carefully stitching a deep shrapnel laceration across his left forearm. He didn't even flinch as the needle punctured his skin.

"He won't stop at the docks, will he?" I asked, watching Clara sleep wrapped in heavy woolen blankets in the corner berth.

"Sterling doesn't know how to stop," Silas replied, pulling the thread tight and cutting it with his teeth. "In his mind, he is serving the greater good of national defense. Men who believe they are righteous are the most dangerous butchers on earth."

"And you?" I asked, looking straight into his eyes. "Who are you serving, Silas?"

He paused, setting the medical supplies on the table. He reached across the narrow space, his rough, calloused fingers gently cupping my cheek.

"For ten years, I served my own survival. Then I bought this harbor to build a kingdom where no one could touch me. But the day you stood in front of that bastard in the diner, Elena... the day you took a beating just to protect a stranger... you gave me something I hadn't felt since I was a boy."

"What?" I whispered.

"A soul," Silas murmured. "I don't fight for the Sovereign Harbor anymore. I fight for the family I don't deserve."

Before I could answer, the ship's radar console in the helm emitted a high-pitched alarm.

Matteo’s voice crackled through the intercom: "Boss! Visual contact. Three miles off the shoals of Montauk. We found it."

Silas and I climbed the narrow ladder to the wheelhouse. Through the rain-lashed windshield, the silhouette of a monstrous industrial structure loomed out of the churning sea.

It was an abandoned offshore drilling rig—decommissioned twenty years ago, but now glowing with security searchlights, covered in communications arrays, and bristling with automated defense turrets.

"The Citadel," Silas murmured, his jaw hardening. "Sterling’s unauthorized black site. That's where he keeps the biological archives, the black budget accounts, and the heavy extraction labs."

"Look at the flight deck," Matteo pointed.

A military transport helicopter was idling on the rig’s helipad, its rotors spinning through the downpour, preparing for departure.

"They’re preparing to evacuate," Silas realized, his eyes narrowing into slits. "Sterling knows the harbor raid failed. He’s packing up his research and moving to a federal bunker where I can't reach him."

"Then we don't let that helicopter take off," I said, my voice cold, steady, and fierce.

Silas looked at me, a dark, proud smile carving across his face. "Matteo, disengage the radar dampeners. Full throttle into the support pillars. We're breaching the platform."
