Chapter 21 - The Ghost of Blackwatch

The red digits dropped with chilling precision: *59... 58... 57...*

"Get Clara behind the crane! Now!" Silas’s voice cracked across the pier like a gunshot, shattering the morning stillness.

He didn't hesitate. In one violent, fluid motion, he snatched our daughter from my arms, thrust her behind the reinforced steel stanchion of Salvage Crane Number One, and shoved me down beside her. His body formed an impenetrable wall of sinew, iron, and fury between us and the hissing titanium container.

"Silas, what is that?!" I screamed over the deafening hiss of escaping nitrogen gas. "What did that computer call her?!"

"A ghost from before I ever laid eyes on you, Elena," Silas gritted through clenched teeth. His hands were already tearing into the maintenance panel beneath the digital display. His fingers moved with terrifying muscle memory—stripping wires, bypassing copper nodes, calculating the fail-safe sequence of a bomb he hadn't seen in twelve years. "Project Chimera. Special Recon Task Force Blackwatch. I thought I burned every record when I buried my military tags in the salt marshes."

*32... 31... 30...*

Matteo and four armed dockworkers rushed forward with crowbars, but Silas roared at them without turning around: "Back off! It’s a thermite-dispersal charge! If you puncture the casing, the docks will burn at three thousand degrees!"

Clara buried her face into my chest, trembling, clutching my collar. "Daddy! Please don't leave!"

"I'm right here, angel," Silas whispered, his voice suddenly steady, completely devoid of panic even as sweat dripped from his jawline onto the sparking circuit board. "Elena, look at me."

I forced my eyes to his. The cold, ruthless predator who had dismantled the entire Moretti crime family was gone; in his gaze was raw, desperate love.

"If this timer hits zero, Clara is not the target of a blast. She is the target of a neural tracking beacon. That freighters' scuttling wasn't a mafia revenge hit. It was a Trojan horse deployed by the Pentagon's deepest shadow unit. They didn't come for the harbor. They came for her."

*10... 9... 8...*

Silas jammed his combat knife deep into the primary conduit, ripping two gold-plated filaments free and grounding the current against his own steel belt buckle. A blinding blue arc of electricity exploded across his chest, sending a violent shockwave through his arms. He grunted in agony, the smell of scorched fabric and ozone filling the air.

*01...*

The red numbers flickered, groaned, and dissolved into black static.

The hissing ceased. The dock fell dead silent, save for Silas’s ragged breathing as he collapsed onto one knee, his knuckles bleeding onto the salt-stained concrete.

I scrambled forward, grabbing his trembling shoulders. "Silas! Silas, talk to me!"

He caught my wrist, his grip bruised with desperation. Slowly, the heavy vault doors unsealed entirely with a sickening hydraulic clank. Inside, nestled on a cushioned hydraulic pedestal, sat a small cryogenic vial labeled with our daughter’s genetic sequence, alongside a black encrypted satellite transponder.

Above the transponder, an automated red light blinked three times. A recorded voice, cold and authoritative, crackled from the transponder speaker:
