Chapter 7 - Ghosts of Salerno

The Mediterranean wind howled against the jagged stone cliffs of Salerno, whipping the dark, churning waves into a white-capped frenzy. Perched precariously on the edge of the precipice, the San Michele Sanitarium loomed like a monolithic fortress of despair, its rusted iron bars and damp, ivy-covered walls concealing decades of silenced screams and buried secrets.
A sleek black helicopter bearing the crest of the Moretti syndicate descended silently through the dense fog, touching down on the rocky helipad a hundred yards from the asylum’s rusted perimeter gates.
The cabin door slid open with a sharp clack. Alessandro stepped out first, the fierce coastal wind catching his heavy coat. His face was carved from granite, his dark eyes locked onto the towering structure ahead. Dante followed closely behind, carrying an encrypted tactical case, followed by Rosa, who carefully carried a sleeping Lily inside a warm travel blanket.
"Perimeter is secured, Boss," Dante reported over the howling wind, speaking into a tactical comms unit. "Local authorities have been paid off or warned to stay fifty miles away. The asylum is entirely isolated."
"Good," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register. "We go in through the lower intake entrance. No alarms, no chatter. We find Elena, and we burn this damned place to the ground."
They moved with the silent, predatory efficiency of a special operations unit. Dante bypassed the exterior electronic locks with a portable decoder in seconds, and the heavy iron service door swung open, welcoming them into the freezing, sterile corridors of the sanitarium.
The interior smelled of antiseptic, damp stone, and forgotten humanity. Faint, echoing moans echoed from distant cells, but the guards were nowhere in sight—having been conveniently drawn away by a staged power outage at the local precinct orchestrated by Moretti operatives in Rome.
As they navigated the subterranean levels, Rosa kept Lily pressed tightly against her chest. The little girl stirred slightly, opening her massive, dark eyes—eyes that were a living echo of the grandmother they had come to rescue.
"We're almost there, my angel," Rosa whispered softly, kissing Lily’s forehead.
Alessandro stopped in front of a heavy, reinforced steel door marked with a faded plaque: *Sub-Level 4 — Restricted Medical Ward.*
"This is it," Alessandro said, his hand hovering over the electronic keypad. He pulled a heavy master keycard—recovered from his father’s private safe back in New York—and swiped it through the reader.
*BEEP.*
The green light flashed. The heavy deadbolts retracted with a loud, metallic clunk.
Alessandro pushed the door open.
The room inside was little more than a stone cell, dimly lit by a single high barred window facing the raging sea. In the corner, huddled on a narrow iron cot under a thin gray blanket, sat an elderly woman.
She flinched at the sound of the door opening, pulling her frail arms around herself, her silver hair falling across her face.
"It's... it's time for medicine already?" a voice rasped, weak and paper-thin. "I told you... I won't take your poisons."
Alessandro froze in the doorway. All the air rushed out of his lungs. He took one slow, trembling step forward into the cell.
"Elena..." he whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt since he was twelve years old.
The elderly woman stopped. She slowly raised her head, her pale, delicate face turning toward him. When her dark, luminous eyes locked onto Alessandro’s face, the color drained entirely from her cheeks.
She stood up slowly, her frail legs shaking beneath her. She reached out a trembling hand, touching the air as if afraid the vision would vanish if she dared make contact.
"A-Alessandro...?" she whispered, tears instantly spilling over her wrinkled eyelids. "My little boy... no... you're a man... my God, you're a grown man..."
"Mother," Alessandro choked out, the final wall around his heart shattering completely. He crossed the room in two strides and pulled her fragile, trembling body into his arms, burying his face in her silver hair as he wept silent, heavy tears.
Rosa stood in the doorway, watching the reunion with a lump in her throat, tears streaming down her own cheeks.
Suddenly, Lily stirred in Rosa’s arms. She pushed her blanket aside, rubbed her eyes, and looked up at the elderly woman embracing Alessandro.
With the innocent curiosity of a child, Lily pointed a tiny finger at Elena.
"Pretty," Lily said softly.
Elena pulled back from Alessandro, her tear-filled eyes widening in shock as she looked past her son to see Rosa and the little girl standing in the doorway. She stared at Lily’s face—at those exact same dark, searching eyes, the arch of the brow, the familiar innocence.
"Is that..." Elena breathed, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "Is that... my granddaughter?"
Alessandro smiled through his tears, stepping back to take Rosa’s hand, pulling them both forward. "Yes, Mother. This is Rosa... and this is Lily. Your blood."
Elena reached out with shaking hands, gently cupping Lily’s small face. "Elena’s eyes..." she whispered, a radiant, miraculous smile breaking through decades of sorrow. "My family... you came back for me."
"Always," Alessandro vowed, his jaw set with fierce, unbreakable resolve. "We're going home. And no one will ever lock you away again."

Suddenly, the red emergency alarm inside the sanitarium began to wail, piercing the cold coastal air with deafening urgency.
Dante stepped into the cell doorway, his weapon raised, his face grim. "Boss, we've got incoming! Local mercenaries—paid by Vincent Romano’s offshore accounts before we dismantled him—they've breached the upper courtyard. They know we're here!"
Alessandro’s tender reunion instantly vanished, replaced by the terrifying, merciless fury of Don Moretti. He gently placed his mother into Rosa’s arms.
"Protect her," Alessandro ordered Dante and Rosa, racking the slide of his pistol with a lethal *clack*.
"Where are you going?" Rosa cried out, grabbing his arm.
May you like
"To clean house," Alessandro said, kissing her forehead fiercely. "Stay behind me. We're walking out of here together."
