Chapter 3 - The King’s Ultimatum

The morning sun broke over the Hudson River, casting a brilliant, golden hue across the twelve acres of the Moretti estate. But inside the grand study on the second floor, the atmosphere was as cold and sharp as fractured ice.
Alessandro Moretti sat behind his heavy walnut desk, his dark espresso cooling untouched beside a leather-bound ledger. Standing before him was Dante, alongside Mr. Bruno, who carried a silver tray holding a secure satellite phone.
"The warehouse district in Brooklyn is secured, Boss," Dante reported, his face grim. "Romano’s men pulled back completely after the raid at the gates last night. They didn't expect us to hit back so hard, so fast. But intelligence says Vincent is calling a summit of the Five Families in Manhattan for tonight. He’s trying to brand you as a liability to the commission."
Alessandro didn't blink. He steepened his fingers, resting his chin against his knuckles.
"Vincent is desperate," Alessandro said coldly. "He lost his best enforcer, his daughter was publicly disgraced, and his assault on my home failed miserably. He’s running out of time and options."
"Shall we intercept the summit, Boss?" Mr. Bruno asked quietly.
"No," Alessandro replied, a dangerous glint flashing in his dark eyes. "Let him gather them. Let him complain to the elders. Let him try to turn the commission against me. When a cornered dog barks, you don't shoot it immediately—you let it exhaust itself before you put it down."
Just then, the heavy oak doors of the study creaked open.
Rosa stepped inside. She had changed out of her worn maid’s apron for the first time in four years. She wore a simple, elegant emerald-green silk dress that belonged to the estate's guest wardrobe, her dark hair cascading in soft waves over her shoulders. She looked breathtaking, though her hands were slightly trembling as she carried a small plate of pastries and fresh coffee for Alessandro.
Alessandro’s eyes softened instantly the moment she crossed the threshold. The ruthless Don Moretti vanished, replaced by a man utterly captivated.
"Rosa," Alessandro said, standing up from his desk and walking around to meet her halfway. "You should be resting."
"I can't sleep, Alessandro," Rosa said softly, setting the tray down on a side table. "Too much has happened. And... Lily is asking for you."
Before Alessandro could answer, a small patter of footsteps echoed from the hallway. A pair of tiny duck socks appeared in the doorway, followed closely by Lily, who toddled into the study holding her stuffed rabbit, *Bun*, under one arm.
"Daddy!" Lily announced happily, completely oblivious to the criminal empires colliding around her.
Alessandro knelt instantly, scooping the little girl into his arms and lifting her high into the air, eliciting a bright, musical giggle from the child. Rosa watched them, a lump forming in her throat. The transformation in Alessandro was nothing short of miraculous; the hardened criminal underworld boss melted into an entirely devoted father within seconds.
"Did you sleep well, princess?" Alessandro asked, kissing her cheek.
"Hungry," Lily declared, patting Alessandro’s cheek with her palm.
Rosa smiled faintly, stepping forward. "I'll get her breakfast, Alessandro. You have business to attend to."
"No," Alessandro said firmly, keeping Lily cradled in one arm while reaching out with his free hand to gently take Rosa’s fingers. "From now on, we eat together. No more kitchens, no more hiding, Rosa. You are the mistress of this house."
Rosa’s breath hitched. "Alessandro, the staff... the underworld... they won't understand. A maid—"
"Let them talk," Alessandro interrupted, his voice dropping to a fierce, protective growl. "Let anyone who has a problem come through me. My father ran this family on fear and secrecy. I will run it on absolute loyalty and truth. You and Lily are my blood."
Mr. Bruno, standing discreetly by the corner of the study, bowed his head respectfully. "Well spoken, Boss. It is time this house had a proper family again."

Meanwhile, sixty miles away in a high-rise penthouse overlooking Central Park, Vincent Romano was slamming his fists against a mahogany conference table. Surrounding him were the heads of the other four major syndicates in the tri-state area: the Falcones, the Mazaris, the Morellis, and the Gallos.
"Are you all blind?!" Vincent roared, his face flushed with rage. "Alessandro Moretti has lost his mind! He threw my daughter out on the street like trash, murdered Rossi in cold blood at his own front door, and now he’s parading around some kitchen maid and her bastard child as if he’s invincible!"
Don Falcone, an elderly man with silver hair and cold, calculating eyes, took a slow sip of his whiskey before speaking. "Calm down, Vincent. You sent a tactical hit squad onto Moretti’s private property unannounced. What did you expect him to do? Roll out the red carpet?"
"He violated the commission's code!" Vincent lied smoothly, desperate to rally support. "He’s unstable! If we let him keep consolidating power with his new bloodline, none of our shipping lanes are safe. He’ll take over the entire eastern seaboard!"
"And what do you propose, Vincent?" Don Mazari asked, raising an eyebrow. "War? You want us to declare open war on the Moretti syndicate? Do you have any idea how much money we'll lose?"
"We don't need a war," Vincent smiled, a malicious, venomous expression spreading across his face. "We just need a distraction. I have men inside his estate. Men who know every hallway, every hidden room, every vulnerability. We take what matters most to him. We take the child."
The room fell dead silent. The other dons exchanged uneasy glances. Even in the brutal underworld, going after a three-year-old child crossed a sacred, unwritten line.
"You're playing a very dangerous game, Vincent," Falcone warned quietly. "If Alessandro finds out you touched that girl, he won't just kill you. He will burn your entire family tree to ash and salt the earth where you stood."
"He won't have the chance," Vincent sneered, pulling out a burner phone. "Tonight, the Moretti estate falls."

Back at the estate, night had fallen once again. The moon was obscured by heavy, slate-gray storm clouds, casting the sprawling twelve-acre property in deep, gloomy shadows.
Inside the nursery, Rosa was reading a bedtime story to Lily, who was snuggled deep beneath her blankets, clutching *Bun* tightly. Alessandro sat nearby in an armchair, going over architectural blueprints of the estate’s security grid, though his eyes kept drifting back to Rosa and the child.
Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered violently and then went completely dark.
Silence descended upon the room, broken only by the low rumble of thunder outside.
Alessandro stood up instantly, his hand dropping to the holster at his waist. "The backup generators. They've been sabotaged."
Rosa’s heart skipped a beat. She scooped Lily into her arms, pressing the trembling child against her chest. "Alessandro..."
"Stay behind me," Alessandro ordered, his voice laced with deadly calm as he drew his pistol and stepped toward the door.
Before he could reach the handle, the heavy oak door was violently kicked inward, splintering wood flying everywhere. Silhouetted in the dim, emergency-lit hallway stood three masked figures clad in tactical gear, automatic weapons raised and pointing straight at them.
"Don Moretti," a harsh voice hissed from behind a black ski mask. "Don't move, or the brat dies first."
Rosa screamed, shielding Lily’s head with her hands.

Alessandro’s eyes turned completely black, blazing with a terrifying, apocalyptic fury. The trap had sprung, but he was more than ready to slaughter every last rat that dared set foot in his house.
