Chapter 4 - The Price of Treachery

The darkness of the nursery was pierced only by the faint, pulsing red glow of the emergency lights and the menacing silhouette of the three masked intruders holding assault rifles.

"Drop the weapon, Moretti!" the lead intruder barked, his voice distorted by a tactical communicator. "Drop it now, or the girl gets a bullet through her skull!"

Rosa clutched Lily so tightly her knuckles turned bone-white. Lily whimpered, burying her face into her mother’s shoulder, too terrified to even cry.

Alessandro didn't drop his gun. Instead, his posture shifted—not into surrender, but into the coiled, lethal readiness of a striking viper. The temperature in the room seemed to plummet ten degrees.

"You have exactly three seconds," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a register so cold and quiet it sent shivers down the spines of even the hardened mercenaries. "To drop your weapons, get on your knees, and pray I decide to make your deaths quick."

"You're in no position to—"

*BANG.*

Alessandro didn't wait for the intruder to finish his sentence. With blinding, unnatural speed, he raised his pistol and fired. The silenced bullet tore through the air, catching the lead gunman squarely in the throat. The man choked out a gurgling gasp, dropping his rifle as he crashed backward into the hallway wall, sliding down into a lifeless heap.

The other two operatives panicked, swinging their assault rifles toward Alessandro.

"Shoot him! Shoot him!"

Before their fingers could depress the triggers, Alessandro lunged forward, closing the distance with terrifying velocity. He slammed his elbow into the second gunman's solar plexus, knocking the wind out of him in a violent wheeze, then spun and smashed the butt of his pistol against the man's temple, sending him crashing unconscious to the floor.

The third operative managed to fire a burst, but the bullets chewed harmlessly into the wooden doorframe as Alessandro grabbed the barrel of the rifle, wrenched it upward with brute force, and swept the man’s legs out from under him. With a brutal stomp to the chest, the last intruder went limp, gasping for air before passing out cold.

Total elapsed time: four seconds.

Alessandro stood amidst the fallen mercenaries, his chest rising and falling slowly, his eyes burning with an unholy fury. He holstered his weapon and immediately turned back to Rosa and Lily.

"Are you alright?" he demanded, rushing to them and pulling both of them into his arms.

"We're... we're okay," Rosa stammered, shaking uncontrollably as she clung to his jacket. "Alessandro, how did they get past the perimeter? Dante said the guards—"

"It wasn't an outside breach," Alessandro interrupted, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "The security codes used to disable the generators and override the door locks... those codes belong only to my inner circle."

Rosa’s breath caught. "You mean... there's a traitor?"

"Inside my own house," Alessandro said grimly.

Just then, the emergency lights flickered back on as the backup generators finally kicked in. Heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway, and Dante appeared in the doorway, his weapon drawn, followed by two heavily armed guards. Dante stopped dead in his tracks as he surveyed the unconscious and dead intruders littering the floor.

"Boss! We heard gunfire—" Dante started, then noticed the look on Alessandro’s face.

"Dante," Alessandro said, his voice dangerously low. "Lock down the entire estate. Nobody enters. Nobody leaves. Gather every single servant, guard, and staff member in the grand ballroom in ten minutes. If anyone tries to run, shoot them in the legs."

"Understood, Boss," Dante said grimly, knowing better than to ask questions when Alessandro looked like this.

Fifteen minutes later, the grand ballroom of the Moretti estate looked like a scene from an inquisitorial tribunal.

The towering crystal chandeliers blazed overhead, casting harsh light across the terrified faces of thirty estate employees—cooks, maids, gardeners, and security guards—standing in tight, nervous clusters. At the far end of the room, standing atop the elevated dais, was Alessandro Moretti.

He didn't sit. He stood with his arms crossed behind his back, towering over the crowd like an executioner. Dante and Mr. Bruno stood on either side of him, while Rosa sat in a chair nearby, holding Lily, who had finally fallen back asleep against her shoulder.

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom slammed shut. The echo sounded like a gunshot in the silent room.

"For four years," Alessandro began, his deep, resonant voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous room, "I have maintained one rule in this house: absolute loyalty is rewarded, and betrayal is punished by death."

A collective shiver ran through the crowd. No one dared to breathe.

"Tonight, an assassination squad breached my private quarters. They knew the layout. They knew the patrol routes. Most importantly... they had the master security bypass codes." Alessandro’s dark eyes swept slowly over the crowd, locking onto each person one by one. "Codes that only four people in this room possess: Dante, Mr. Bruno, Head Chef Marco, and Chief of Security Mateo."

At the mention of his name, Mateo—a tall, heavily built security guard standing near the back—visibly flinched, a bead of cold sweat rolling down his temple.

"Mateo," Alessandro called out softly.

All heads snapped toward the back of the room. Mateo swallowed hard, taking a nervous step backward. "B-Boss? You don't think... I've served you for six years!"

"Step forward," Alessandro commanded.

Mateo hesitated, his hand twitching toward his waist holster.

*Clack.*

Before Mateo’s fingers could even touch his gun, Dante had a pistol leveled squarely between Mateo’s eyes.

"Don't even think about it, Mateo," Dante snarled.

Mateo slowly raised his hands, his face draining of all color. "Boss, it wasn't me! It was Vincent Romano! He... he threatened my family in Chicago! They had my brother, they said if I didn't give them the codes—"

"You traded my family's safety for your own skin," Alessandro interrupted, his voice devoid of all human warmth.

Mateo collapsed to his knees, sobbing uncontrollably. "Please, Boss! Have mercy! I'm sorry!"

Alessandro walked down from the dais. He didn't run. He walked with slow, deliberate steps until he stood right in front of the trembling traitor. He looked down at Mateo with a gaze so utterly devoid of mercy that it terrified everyone in the room.

"Mercy is something you ask God for, Mateo," Alessandro said quietly. "You won't get it from me."

He nodded to Dante.

Two guards grabbed Mateo by the arms and dragged him screaming out of the ballroom, the heavy oak doors closing behind them, shutting off his cries.

Alessandro turned back to the remaining staff, his eyes burning with fierce authority.

"Let this be the first and last time treason ever darkens my doors," Alessandro declared, his voice echoing off the marble walls. "Return to your quarters. The night is over."

As the staff quietly and hurriedly filed out of the ballroom, Rosa looked across the room at Alessandro. He stood alone under the brilliant chandeliers, a king reigning over a dark and dangerous kingdom. But when he caught her eye, the terrifying monster of the underworld dissolved, and he walked slowly back to her and their daughter, ready to protect them against the entire world.
