Chapter 10 - The Golden Button

The spring breeze swept across the sprawling green lawns of the Moretti estate, carrying the sweet scent of blooming roses and freshly cut grass. Twelve acres of immaculate gardens, towering stone walls, and wrought-iron gates stood not as a fortress of isolation and fear, but as a sanctuary of warmth, laughter, and unbreakable family bonds.
Today, the grand courtyard was transformed. White silk banners draped gracefully between the ancient oak trees, and long mahogany tables were adorned with crystal glassware, white lilies, and silver candelabras. Guests from across the city—reformed syndicate leaders, trusted local merchants, loyal estate staff, and high-society figures—mingled easily under the afternoon sun, celebrating an event the underworld would talk about for generations.
The wedding of Don Alessandro Moretti and Rosa Mendes.
Inside the grand dressing suite on the second floor, Rosa stood before the full-length mirror, breathtaking in a custom-designed, off-the-shoulder lace wedding gown that cascaded gracefully onto the polished floor. Her dark hair was styled in soft, elegant waves, secured with a delicate diamond-encrusted tiara that Elena had worn decades ago.
Beside her, little Lily—now four years old—wore a miniature white silk flower-girl dress that matched her mother’s perfectly, complete with a tiny pair of white shoes replacing her old duck socks. Though, true to form, clutched tightly in Lily’s left hand was her most prized possession: the small, engraved golden button she had picked off the hallway floor four years ago.
"You look like an absolute queen, Mama," Elena said softly, stepping up behind Rosa and adjusting the veil with trembling, affectionate hands.
Rosa turned around, her eyes shining with unshed tears of pure happiness. "I never imagined... I never dreamed I would ever feel like this, Elena. Thank you for giving me this family."
"We found each other, my dear," Elena smiled warmly, kissing Rosa’s cheek. "You saved Alessandro from his own darkness. You are the heart of this family now."
Suddenly, the heavy oak door opened, and Alessandro stepped into the room.
He wore a tailored obsidian tuxedo with a sharp black bowtie, looking every bit the formidable Don Moretti, but the terrifying chill that had once defined him was completely gone. In its place was a quiet, overwhelming radiance of pure joy as his dark eyes locked onto Rosa.
He stopped dead in his tracks. For a moment, the bustling estate, the hundreds of guests downstairs, and the weight of his entire empire vanished. There was only Rosa.
"Rosa..." Alessandro breathed, crossing the room in three long strides. He took her hands in his, kissing her knuckles tenderly. "You take my breath away. Every single day."
Rosa smiled, her heart fluttering as if they had only just met in the hallway years ago. "You clean up nicely yourself, Mr. Moretti."
Before Alessandro could reply, a small tug on his trouser leg caught his attention. He looked down.
Lily stood there, looking up at him with those massive, luminous dark eyes, holding up her tiny hand. Resting in her palm was the golden button.
"Daddy," Lily announced proudly. "Pretty."
Alessandro knelt down instantly, scooping the little girl up into his arms, pressing a soft kiss to her cheek. He reached out with his free hand, gently taking the golden button from her palm and placing it safely into the inside pocket of his tuxedo jacket, right over his heart.
"Yes, princess," Alessandro whispered, looking between Lily and Rosa with an expression of profound, eternal devotion. "The prettiest thing in the world."

Ten minutes later, the gentle strains of a classical violin quartet drifted across the gardens.
Beneath a massive floral archway draped in white roses, surrounded by family, friends, and loyal allies, Alessandro and Rosa stood face to face.
The priest smiled warmly, holding open a heavy leather-bound Bible. "Do you, Alessandro Moretti, take this woman, Rosa Mendes, to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love her, honor her, and protect her through all the days of your life?"
Alessandro looked deep into Rosa’s eyes, his voice steady, ringing clear and strong across the silent courtyard.
"I do."
The priest turned. "And do you, Rosa Mendes, take this man, Alessandro Moretti, to be your lawfully wedded husband, to stand by his side through light and shadow, forever?"
Rosa smiled, tears of joy sparkling in her eyes. "I do."
"With the power vested in me, and before God and all present, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Alessandro, you may kiss your bride."
Alessandro didn't hesitate. He pulled Rosa into his arms, sealing their vows with a deep, passionate kiss that made the entire courtyard erupt into thunderous applause, cheers, and champagne toasts.
Lily, standing right beside them, clapped her hands together gleefully, laughing out loud as rose petals rained down from the overhead branches.
Later that evening, as the stars came out and the string quartet transitioned into soft, romantic melodies for the reception dance, Alessandro held Rosa close in his arms on the illuminated dance floor.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Moretti," Alessandro murmured against her hair as they swayed gently to the music.
Rosa rested her head against his chest, right over the pocket where the golden button safely rested. She smiled into the night, feeling the warm, steady heartbeat of the man who had rewritten her entire destiny.
"I was just thinking," Rosa whispered softly, "that I'm awfully glad I dropped that coffee cup four years ago."

Alessandro chuckled, a rich, deep sound of absolute contentment, tightening his arms around her waist as he kissed the top of her head.
"So am I, my love," Alessandro whispered into the dark, star-filled night. "So am I."
