Chapter 2 - Blood on the Iron Gates

The alarm klaxons wailed through the corridors of the Moretti estate like a pack of hunting wolves. Red emergency lights pulsed along the polished marble hallways, casting long, menacing shadows across the ancestral portraits.

Inside the nursery, Rosa gasped, clutching Lily tighter to her chest as the little girl startled awake, letting out a soft, frightened cry.

"Shh, my angel, mommy's here," Rosa whispered, rocking her frantically while her own heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Before Rosa could stand, the door swung open smoothly. Alessandro stood in the doorway, his expression instantly shifting from the tender vulnerability he had shown moments ago to the terrifying, remorseless mask of Don Moretti. He had discarded his suit jacket, and a heavy tactical holster was strapped securely over his dark shirt, the polished steel of a silenced pistol catching the amber pulse of the emergency lights.

"Stay in this room," Alessandro ordered, his voice commanding and absolute. "Dante is stationed outside the door with four armed guards. No one gets in. No one."

"Alessandro, what's happening?" Rosa’s voice trembled, her knuckles white as she gripped Lily’s blanket. "Is it... is it the Romanos?"

"They've come to collect a debt that doesn't exist," Alessandro replied coldly, his eyes locking onto hers with a fierce intensity that seemed to pull the breath right out of her lungs. "Lock the door behind me. Do not open it for anyone except me."

Before she could reply, he turned and vanished down the corridor, his heavy footsteps fading into the distance.

Down at the main entrance, the tranquility of the twelve-acre estate had been shattered into a war zone.

Heavy-duty black SUVs had rammed directly through the fourteen-foot wrought-iron security gates, their mangled iron bars twisted like dry twigs. Armed men clad in tactical black gear poured through the breach, their assault rifles raised as they exchanged heavy suppressing fire with the estate’s stationed guards. Glass shattered from the grand arched windows flanking the front double doors as stray rounds chewed through the centuries-old stonework.

Dante crouched behind a marble pillar in the grand foyer, a submachine gun braced against his shoulder as he returned fire with ruthless efficiency. Two Romano operatives crumpled to the floor, their bodies sliding across the polished marble, leaving dark trails of crimson in their wake.

"They're pushing through the east courtyard!" a guard shouted over the deafening cacophony of gunfire. "They've brought breaching charges for the side doors!"

"Hold the line!" Dante roared back, pulling the pin on a flashbang grenade and tossing it through the shattered doorway.

*BOOM.*

A blinding white flash and a deafening shockwave reverberated through the entrance hall, followed by agonized screams from outside as the Romano advance ground to a sudden, chaotic halt.

From the shadows of the grand staircase, Alessandro descended. He moved not with haste, but with the terrifying, inevitable momentum of an avalanche. He didn't duck or flinch as shards of glass rained down from the ceiling. He racked the slide of his pistol, a cold, dead calm settling over his features.

"Boss," Dante grunt, reloading his weapon behind cover. "They've got at least thirty men. Vincent Romano isn't holding back. This is a full-scale assassination attempt."

"He thinks he's punishing me for throwing his daughter out," Alessandro said, his voice dangerously low as he stepped out into the open foyer, completely exposed, yet somehow untouchable. "He has no idea he just walked into his own execution."

Suddenly, the massive oak front doors splintered inward with a deafening crash. A massive explosive charge blew the hinges clean off, sending heavy chunks of wood hurtling through the air. Through the billowing smoke and dust, a hulking figure stepped into the foyer—Bruno 'The Butcher' Rossi, Vincent Romano’s chief enforcer, a man notorious for tearing rival syndicates apart with his bare hands.

Rossi grinned savagely, his scarred face twisting into an ugly sneer as he spotted Alessandro.

"Well, well, Don Moretti," Rossi bellowed, stepping over the threshold with a heavy-duty shotgun raised. "Vincent sends his regards. Hand over the estate, and maybe we'll make your death quick."

Alessandro didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply took two steps forward, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the enforcer.

"You smell like cheap whiskey and bad decisions, Rossi," Alessandro said smoothly. "And you're tracking mud onto my floors."

Enraged, Rossi bellowed like a wounded bull and raised his shotgun to fire.

He never got the chance.

Before Rossi’s finger could squeeze the trigger, Alessandro moved with blinding, unnatural speed. A single suppressed gunshot echoed through the foyer—*thwip*.

Rossi stopped dead in his tracks. A small, perfect red circle bloomed directly between his eyes. The massive enforcer swayed backward like a felled oak tree and crashed heavily onto the marble floor, motionless.

The remaining Romano operatives, who had swarmed through the shattered doorway, froze in sheer horror. In less than three seconds, their deadliest enforcer had been put down like a dog.

Alessandro slowly lowered his pistol, the wisp of smoke curling lazily from the barrel. He looked out at the terrified invaders, his voice cutting through the ringing silence like a razor blade.

"Tell Vincent Romano," Alessandro said, his tone dripping with lethal menace, "that his daughter was an insult, but this... this is an act of war. My daughter and my woman are under my roof. Anyone who breathes near them dies tonight."

The surviving Romano men didn't need to be told twice. They dropped their weapons, turned on their heels, and scrambled desperately over the mangled iron gates, fleeing into the night like terrified rats.

By 3:00 AM, the estate was eerily quiet once again. The shattered windows had been temporarily boarded up, the marble floors scrubbed clean of blood, and the perimeter reinforced with double details of loyal Moretti guards.

Alessandro walked slowly up the stairs, the adrenaline of the firefight completely drained from his system, replaced by a heavy, gnawing exhaustion. He pushed open the door to the nursery.

The room was dimly lit by a bedside lamp. Rosa was sitting on the edge of the plush sofa, wrapped in a blanket, staring blankly at the wall. When she heard the door open, she flinched, her head snapping around.

When she saw Alessandro—alive, uninjured, though his shirt was stained with a smear of soot—all the breath rushed out of her lungs in a ragged sob. She practically flew across the room, throwing her arms around his neck and burying her face in his chest.

Alessandro was momentarily taken aback, his arms hanging awkwardly at his sides before he instinctively wrapped them tightly around her, burying his face in her dark hair.

"You're safe," Alessandro murmured against her ear, his voice rough. "They're gone. No one will ever touch you again."

"I heard the shooting... I thought..." Rosa choked out, her tears dampening his shirt. "I thought they were going to kill us..."

"Never," Alessandro vowed, pulling back just enough to look deeply into her tear-stained eyes. "I built this empire to protect what's mine. And you and Lily are mine, Rosa. Whether you were ready for it or not."

Rosa looked up at him, the fear in her heart slowly giving way to a fierce, overwhelming wave of emotion. For four years, she had been invisible. Now, she was standing in the eye of a hurricane, held by the most dangerous man in the city, who looked at her not as a servant, but as his entire world.

From the crib behind them, a sleepy little voice piped up.

"Daddy?"

Both Alessandro and Rosa froze.

Alessandro slowly turned his head. Lily was sitting up in her crib, rubbing her eyes with one tiny fist, clutching the golden button in the other. She looked directly at Alessandro, tilting her head with innocent curiosity.

A slow, genuine smile—rare and breathtaking—spread across Alessandro’s hardened face. He walked over to the crib, gently picked the little girl up in his strong arms, and held her close against his chest.

"Yes, little one," Alessandro whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "I'm right here."

Rosa stood beside them, watching the two most important people in her life, realizing that the war with the Romanos was only just beginning—and she was ready to burn the world down to protect this family.
