Chapter 9 - The Arrest at the Sterling Estate

At 8:30 PM, three black-and-white police cruisers and an unmarked detective vehicle pulled up the winding gravel driveway of the Sterling manor, their blue and red emergency strobes illuminating the manicured hedges and stone gargoyles in garish flashes.

Evelyn was in the formal drawing room, seated in her high-backed velvet armchair, sipping gin and tonic while Richard Vance paced in front of the marble fireplace, speaking rapidly on his mobile phone.

"We file for an emergency protective order first thing tomorrow morning, Evelyn," Vance was saying. "We claim Claire attacked you in the hospital room. We use the assault to petition for temporary custody of the boy—"

The heavy oak front doors of the estate were not knocked on; they were kicked open with a thunderous *CRACK*.

"Police! Search warrant!"

Detective Martinez marched down the grand foyer, flanked by four armed officers with tactical vests.

Evelyn set her drink down with a loud clatter on the side table, standing up in outrage. "What is the meaning of this barbarism?! Richard, remove these men from my home immediately!"

"Detective Martinez, you are trespassing on private property without—" Vance started, stepping into Martinez’s path.

Martinez shoved the legal document directly into Vance’s chest. "Arrest warrant for Evelyn Sterling. Charges: Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault with a Deadly Substance, Child Abuse Resulting in Grievous Bodily Harm, and Witness Tampering."

Evelyn’s face drained of every ounce of aristocratic arrogance. "Attempted murder?! Have you lost your mind?! I am a Sterling! My late husband funded your entire precinct’s community outreach program!"

"Turn around and put your hands behind your back, Mrs. Sterling," Martinez said, unclipping the heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt.

"No! Julian! Where is Julian?!" Evelyn shrieked, backing away toward the fireplace, looking wildly around the room like a cornered animal. "Julian will fire all of you! Julian! Tell them who I am!"

"Julian is at the hospital with his daughter," Martinez said, stepping forward with unyielding momentum. "And he is the one who handed us the shrimp paste with your fingerprints all over it."

"He wouldn't!" Evelyn spat, her face contorting with ugly, hysterical hatred. "He is my son! Everything he has belongs to me! That worthless peasant Claire made him do this! She poisoned that little brat herself! She set me up!"

"Officers, cuff her," Martinez commanded.

Two officers grabbed Evelyn’s arms. She fought back, kicking, screaming high-pitched obscenities that shattered the quiet dignity of the ancestral home. Her pearl necklace snapped during the struggle, dozens of luminous white beads scattering across the hardwood floor, bouncing into the shadows like tiny lost teeth.

"You will rot in prison for this, all of you!" Evelyn screamed as the cold steel ratcheted tightly around her frail wrists, pinning them behind her back. "I have millions! I have judges in my pocket! You cannot touch me!"

"Save it for the judge, ma'am," Martinez said calmly, taking her by the elbow and escorting her out the front doors into the glare of the flashing cruiser lights.

Across the street, neighbors stepped out onto their manicured lawns, watching in stunned silence as the grand matriarch of the town was pushed, head bowed, into the back of a police cruiser like a common criminal.
