Chapter 5 - A Mother’s Fury

Dawn crept through the venetian blinds of the PICU, painting the room in pale, sickly yellow stripes.

The low, rhythmic hum of the ventilator was the only sound keeping the room anchored to reality. Little Lily lay motionless, surrounded by IV poles, cooling blankets, and wires taped to her bruised skin. A large plastic tube was taped firmly into the corner of her tiny, chapped mouth.

Claire hadn't slept a second. She sat on the hard plastic chair, holding Lily’s cold, swollen foot between her palms, rubbing warmth into the pale toes.

The door swished open. Julian stepped in, disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, wearing the same crumpled clothes from the night before. In his hand, he carried a sealed clear evidence bag he had obtained from the precinct downstairs. Inside it sat the jar of fermented shrimp paste.

Claire looked up, her face hollowed by grief, her eyes burning like white-hot coals. "Where were you?"

Julian knelt beside her chair, placing the bag on the bedside table. "I found it, Claire. In her kitchen. Hidden under the paper towels."

Claire looked at the jar. The label. The smear of pinkish residue. Her breath hitched, catching in her throat like jagged glass. "She admitted it?"

"She said... she said she was trying to 'desensitize' her," Julian choked out, burying his face in Claire’s lap, sobbing uncontrollably. "She said you were making Lily weak. She told me she did it on purpose, Claire. I'm so sorry... God, I'm so sorry I didn't protect them from her. I should have cut her off years ago. I should have listened to you!"

Claire didn't cry. The tears had evaporated, leaving behind a furnace of pure, unadulterated rage. She stood up, gently dislodging Julian from her lap.

"Where is she now, Julian?"

"She... she was at the house, but she called her attorney, Richard Vance. They were heading here to try and get ahead of the social workers," Julian said, looking up in panic. "Claire, what are you going to do?"

The heavy ICU door swung open again.

Evelyn Sterling walked into the pediatric intensive care unit as if inspecting a newly purchased property. Behind her was Richard Vance, a high-priced corporate defense attorney clutching an expensive leather briefcase.

"Claire," Evelyn said, maintaining a practiced, concerned cadence for the benefit of the passing nurses. "Richard and I have arrived to assist with the hospital administrators. We are arranging for a private pediatric specialist from Boston to be flown in. There is no need for public funding or hospital social workers to pry into family matters."

Claire walked across the room with terrifying, measured slowness.

"Claire, wait—" Julian tried to stand, but Claire had already moved.

With the speed of a striking viper, Claire grabbed Evelyn by the lapels of her pristine trench coat, driving the seventy-year-old woman violently backward until Evelyn slammed against the heavy wooden medicine cabinet. Bottles rattled; metal trays clattered to the floor.

"You touch my daughter again, or even breathe the air in her room, and I will tear your throat out with my teeth," Claire whispered, her voice vibrating with demonic intensity.

"Get your hands off me, you gutter trash!" Evelyn shrieked, losing her aristocratic composure, her eyes wide with shock. "Richard! Call security! She’s assaulting me!"

"Mrs. Sterling, remove your hands immediately or I will have charges pressed!" the lawyer barked, stepping forward.

"Shut up, Richard!" Julian’s roar stunned the entire hallway. Julian stepped directly in front of the lawyer, his chest heaving, his fists clenched tight. "You say one more word to my wife and I’ll break your jaw! Get out of here! Both of you!"

"Julian!" Evelyn cried out, straightening her coat with trembling hands, genuine panic finally flickering in her gaze. "I am your mother! Everything I have built, everything your father left, belongs to you and the children! Are you going to throw away twenty million dollars for this ungrateful woman?!"

"I don't care about your money, Mom," Julian said, his voice flat, dead, and final. "Detective Martinez is waiting at the pediatric nurse station right now. I called him from the parking lot. I gave him the jar. And Leo is giving his official video-recorded statement right now."

Evelyn froze. The color drained from her face, leaving her looking withered, frail, and suddenly ancient.

"You gave them the jar?" she breathed.

May you like

"I gave them everything," Julian said. "Now get out before they put the handcuffs on you in front of my dying daughter."
