Chapter 7 - The Secret Behind the Will

By late afternoon, the legal storm broke over the Sterling family with torrential force.
Julian was sitting in the hospital cafeteria, staring blindly into a cup of lukewarm black coffee, when his father’s old probate lawyer, Arthur Pendelton, arrived. Arthur was seventy-five, a man of quiet integrity who had managed the Sterling family trust for four decades until Evelyn pushed him out two years ago.
"Julian," Pendelton said quietly, sitting down heavily in the plastic booth across from him. "I heard what happened. The entire legal community in town is talking about it."
"She poisoned Lily, Arthur," Julian said, his voice completely deadened. "To prove a point. Because she hated Claire."
"It’s worse than that, Julian," Pendelton sighed, unzipping an old leather folio and sliding a yellowed document across the table. "You need to understand what your father actually wrote into his final testament before he passed."
Julian frowned, looking at the papers. "What does Dad’s will have to do with this?"
"Your father knew what Evelyn was capable of," Pendelton explained, his voice low and confidential. "He knew how narcissistic, controlling, and vindictive she was. When he died, he didn't leave the Sterling estate to Evelyn. He left it in a generation-skipping trust."
Julian blinked. "What?"
"The principal—all twenty-two million dollars, plus the estate—was placed in trust directly for your children, Leo and Lily, to be distributed when they reach twenty-five years of age," Pendelton revealed. "Evelyn only had a lifetime right of residence in the manor and a modest monthly stipend. But there was a specific, fatal clause inserted at the very end."
Julian leaned forward, his hands trembling as he read the highlighted legal text.
*“Clause 14B: In the event that either beneficiary suffers catastrophic incapacitation, permanent disability, or untimely demise prior to the age of eighteen, guardianship of the surviving assets and full administrative control of the principal trust fund shall revert exclusively to Evelyn Sterling, provided the surviving parents are deemed unfit or legally separated from the children’s welfare.”*
Julian felt the room spin. The air was sucked out of his lungs.
"She... she was trying to get control of the trust," Julian whispered, the horror reaching unimaginable depths. "Claire was already threatening to move the kids to Oregon to get away from her. If Lily died... or became permanently brain damaged under Claire’s watch..."
"Evelyn’s lawyers were already preparing a petition for family court alleging gross maternal neglect," Pendelton confirmed somberly. "Richard Vance filed the preliminary paperwork two weeks ago, claiming Claire was mentally unstable and fabricating medical diagnoses for the children. If Lily had a severe allergic reaction while Claire was present, Evelyn was going to argue that Claire either neglected Lily or suffered from Munchausen by proxy. Evelyn would have won full legal custody of Leo, stripped you of your rights, and claimed absolute control of the twenty-two million dollar trust."
Julian crushed the coffee cup in his fist, hot coffee spilling over his knuckles, but he didn't feel the burn.
It was never about an allergy. It was never about a grandmother’s stubborn pride or old-fashioned beliefs.

It was an assassination. It was a cold, premeditated hit on a six-year-old child for power and money.
