Chapter 10 - Julian’s Choice

Two weeks later, the sterile hospital smells were replaced by the warm aroma of cinnamon, roasted chicken, and fresh flowers.

Lily was finally home.

She sat on the living room sofa in her pajamas, tucked beneath three soft blankets, coloring in a picture book with Leo sitting cross-legged beside her, guarding her like an elite secret service agent. Her vocal cords were still slightly raspy, but the doctor assured them there would be no permanent neurological damage. Her survival had been a miracle of timing.

In the kitchen, Julian and Claire stood by the window, watching the children.

The silence between them was heavy, built upon the ruins of the last fourteen days. In those two weeks, Julian had done everything humanly possible to dismantle his mother’s empire of control.

He had formally terminated Richard Vance’s legal services. He had cooperated fully with the District Attorney, providing hours of deposition testimony detailing Evelyn’s history of cruel, calculated manipulations. He had initiated the legal proceedings to remove Evelyn from the family trust permanently, ensuring that every asset was locked safely away for Leo and Lily under Claire’s sole guardianship.

Julian slid an envelope onto the marble island.

"What’s this?" Claire asked quietly, not looking at him.

"It’s the deed to the manor," Julian said softly. "I sold it to an investment firm this morning. The proceeds are going into a medical foundation for pediatric allergy research. And these..." He pulled out another set of papers. "These are the title documents for a house in Oregon, twenty minutes from your sister’s home. It’s completely in your name, Claire."

Claire turned, her eyes searching his exhausted, hollow face. "Julian..."

"I know I failed you," Julian choked out, his voice thick with unhealed grief. "For eight years, I allowed her to make you feel small. I allowed her to question your instincts, to poison our peace, because I was too terrified to admit that my mother was a monster. I almost cost Lily her life because I was a coward."

Tears slipped down Julian’s cheeks, but unlike before, he didn't try to hide them. He stood tall, accepting his guilt without excuses.

"I signed the divorce papers if you want them," Julian whispered, pointing to the bottom of the stack. "You and the kids deserve peace. If my presence only reminds you of what happened that night... I will walk away, Claire. I’ll make sure you have everything, and I’ll leave."

Claire looked down at the divorce papers, then looked through the doorway into the living room, where Leo was making Lily laugh by balancing a crayon on his nose.

She stepped closer to Julian, taking his trembling hand into hers.

"You didn't run when the truth came out, Julian," Claire said softly, her thumb brushing over his knuckles. "You chose our children. You chose us over twenty million dollars and your own mother. We have a long road of therapy ahead of us. We have nightmares to survive. But we survive them together—in Oregon."

Julian buried his head in Claire’s shoulder, clinging to her as if she were the only solid thing in an ocean of wreckage.
