Chapter 8 - Waking Nightmare

Up in the PICU, the atmosphere shifted abruptly at 6:00 PM.

The medical team began slowly weaning Lily off the paralytic drugs and reducing the hypothermia protocol, gradually warming her body back to normal temperature.

Claire stood by the bedside, her fingers intertwined with Lily’s tiny, limp hand. "Come back to me, baby. Please, Lily. Mommy is right here. Open your eyes for Mommy."

The cardiac monitor gave an irregular hitch.

*Beep... beep... beep-beep.*

Lily’s eyelids, translucent and delicate, fluttered. A soft, muffled whimper slipped past the plastic tube taped between her lips.

"Doctor! She's moving!" Claire cried out.

Dr. Evans hurried into the cubicle with a respiratory therapist. "Hold her hands, Claire. Don't let her pull at the tube. Lily, sweetheart, can you hear my voice? You’re safe at the hospital."

Lily’s eyes opened slowly, glazed with heavy sedation, looking unseeingly at the fluorescent ceiling panels. Her small fingers squeezed Claire’s thumb with astonishing, desperate strength.

"I’m here, my love! Mommy is right here!" Claire wept, leaning down, pressing her face against Lily’s cheek. "You're safe. You're going to be okay."

"Airway reflexes are intact," the doctor said, watching the monitor closely. "The swelling in the larynx has resolved thanks to the massive steroids. Let’s extubate."

The therapist moved with practiced speed. The tape was cut away, the pilot balloon deflated, and with a swift, gentle pull, the thick plastic breathing tube was slid out of Lily’s trachea.

Lily gagged, coughing violently, a harsh, raspy sound that scraped through the quiet room. Claire cradled her head, offering tiny sips of ice water through a sponge swab.

For several minutes, Lily could only gasp, her chest heaving as she relearned how to draw air without a machine. Then her unfocused eyes locked onto Claire’s face.

"M-Mommy..." Lily’s voice was barely a scratch, a broken reed in the wind.

"I’m here, baby. Don't try to talk. Just rest."

Tears spilled from Lily’s swollen eyes, rolling down into her ears. Her little body began to shake with primal terror. "Mommy... Grandma... Grandma said..."

"Shh, baby, it’s okay—"

"Grandma said... if I cried... she would lock me in the basement..." Lily sobbed, her words coming in ragged, terrified gasps. "She pushed the spoon in my mouth, Mommy! I told her it hurt! My neck was on fire... and she held my hands down!"

Claire felt her soul shatter into a million jagged pieces of ice.

She held Lily against her breast, rocking her back and forth, shielding her daughter with her own flesh. "She will never touch you again, Lily. Never again. She is dead to us."

At that moment, the door pushed open. Julian stood there, flanked by two uniformed police officers and Detective Martinez.

Julian looked at Lily, alive, conscious, speaking. He fell to his knees beside the bed, burying his face in the blankets, weeping so loudly that nurses down the hall stopped to listen.

"She’s awake, Julian," Claire said, her voice devoid of tears, cold and sharp as a guillotine. "And the police are here to finish this."
