Chapter 7 - Cornered Predators

Two days later, Arthur sat in the high-security conference room of Marcus Kane’s private intelligence compound on Long Island. Monitors covered three walls, tracking flight paths, international wire transfers, and encrypted communications.
"Julian Vance is broken," Marcus reported, throwing a folder onto the stainless steel table. "He’s singing like a canary to the federal prosecutors in exchange for a plea deal that avoids a twenty-year sentence. He turned over every document, every email, every financial ledger."
"And Victoria?" Arthur asked, his voice low.
"She’s out," Marcus said bluntly.
Arthur’s head snapped up. "What do you mean she’s out? Her bail was revoked!"
"Her biological mother, Beatrice Vance-Dupont, whom we all thought died in Europe five years ago, surfaced in Miami," Marcus explained, clicking his remote. A photo of an older, aristocratic woman with cold, identical eyes to Victoria appeared on the screen. "Beatrice leveraged an offshore sovereign bond from Monaco worth fifty million dollars to post Victoria’s bail through an appellate judge before the revocation order was fully entered into the state registry. Victoria walked out of the precinct two hours ago."
"Where is she?" Arthur demanded, rising to his feet, every muscle coiled.
"She vanished the moment she cleared the courthouse steps," Marcus said. "Ditched the ankle monitor in an alley trash can within five minutes. A professional extraction team picked her up. Arthur... they aren't trying to flee the country."
Arthur’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen. "Mia."
"We’ve secured the school," Marcus said rapidly, grabbing his tactical jacket. "Gideon has five armed men stationed at the gates of St. Anne's Academy. But Beatrice Vance-Dupont has resources we didn't anticipate. They aren't going after your money anymore, Arthur. Victoria knows her life is ruined. She is in full scorched-earth mode."
Arthur was already running toward the elevator. "Call Gideon now! Move Mia to the safe room beneath the estate!"

Outside St. Anne’s Academy, the afternoon sky had turned a bruising slate gray. Classes were ending, and lines of luxury vehicles sat idling along the manicured private driveway.
Mia stood in the interior reception hall, holding her backpack, waiting for Gideon. Her teacher, Sister Margaret, smiled down at her. "Your father's security team is just outside, Mia. They're doing an extra security check before you head to the car."
"Okay, Sister," Mia said softly.
Suddenly, the fire alarms throughout the historic stone building shrieked into life. The emergency sprinkler system triggered, drenching the corridors in freezing water. Panic erupted as hundreds of children and teachers began screaming, flooding into the hallways toward the emergency exits.
In the chaos, the power cut out. The emergency lights bathed the reception hall in eerie crimson.
Sister Margaret grabbed Mia’s hand, but a dense smoke grenade bounced across the tiles, erupting into a blinding, suffocating cloud of white phosphorus smoke. Sister Margaret coughed violently, her grip slipping as someone forcefully shoved her against the wall.
"Mia!" the teacher screamed through the haze.
Through the smoke, a figure dressed in dark tactical gear stepped forward. A gloved hand clamped tightly over Mia’s mouth, lifting her off her feet before she could scream.
Mia kicked wildly, tears streaming down her face as she was hauled out of a broken side window into the alley behind the school gymnasium.
A black delivery van waited, engine idling.
The rear doors swung open. Inside sat Victoria. Her face was gaunt, her eyes hollow and bloodshot, filled with an unhinged, manic obsession.

"Hello, Mia," Victoria whispered, her voice trembling with madness. "Did you miss me?"
