Chapter 2 - Cold Blood and Broken Vows

The heavy iron gates of the Sterling estate slammed shut behind Victoria’s sleek Mercedes-Benz, the sound echoing through the midnight air like a gunshot. The drizzle had started, tapping a mournful rhythm against the grand French windows of the study.
Arthur sat behind his massive desk, his tie undone, the top buttons of his dress shirt loose. Mia was upstairs, finally asleep after two hours of gentle reassurance, wrapped in Clara’s favorite quilt and guarded outside her bedroom door by Gideon, Arthur’s most trusted head of private security.
Arthur rubbed his temples, staring at the open manila folder on his desk. Opposite him sat Thomas Vance, the Sterling family’s chief legal counsel for over twenty years.
"The footage is indisputable, Arthur," Thomas said, adjusting his half-moon spectacles. "The physical assault, the destruction of sentimental property, the verbal and psychological abuse of a minor. We can obtain an emergency temporary restraining order by eight o'clock tomorrow morning."
"I don't just want a restraining order, Thomas," Arthur said, his voice flat, devoid of fatigue, fueled entirely by a father's protective rage. "I want her dismantled. I want full legal termination of her parental and marital claims. I want to know how a woman who acted like a saint for an entire year turned into a demon behind closed doors."
Thomas sighed, pulling out a thick document embossed with the seal of the Sterling Logistics Trust. "That’s where things become complicated. Victoria didn't enter this marriage blindly. When you signed the supplemental estate registry six months ago—the one updating your corporate asset management following the merger—Victoria’s personal attorney slipped in an addendum."
Arthur’s eyes narrowed into slits. "What addendum?"
"Clause 14-B," Thomas murmured, tapping the paper. "In the event of an alleged fault-based separation initiated within two years of the merger, thirty percent of the voting shares of Sterling Logistics are temporarily frozen and diverted into a neutral escrow managed by... Vance & Sterling Trust Partners."
Arthur sat upright. "Your family's firm?"
Thomas swallowed hard, looking genuinely pained. "Not my branch, Arthur. My estranged younger brother, Julian Vance. He left our firm three years ago to start his own boutique hedge fund. Victoria’s attorney of record isn't a family law practitioner. It’s Julian Vance’s senior legal partner."
A cold draft seemed to slip through the sealed windows. Arthur’s mind raced backward, connecting dates, dinners, seemingly accidental social encounters. Fourteen months ago, Victoria had entered his life at a charity foundation for pediatric cancer—an organization Clara had passionately supported. Victoria had seemed gentle, empathetic, understanding of his grief. She had spent hours listening to Arthur talk about Clara, pretending to honor Clara's memory while slowly weaving herself into the fabric of his life and Mia’s routine.
"It wasn't an organic romance," Arthur said, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "She targeted me."
"It looks worse than that," Thomas admitted. "Julian Vance has been aggressively buying short positions on your company’s stock for the past three weeks. If Victoria files a domestic claim alleging *you* fabricated the video—or claims you attacked her and staged the footage to seize her assets—she can tie your company up in a public scandal. The board could panic. The stock will plummet. And Julian Vance will sweep in to buy the remaining shares at a fraction of their value."
Before Arthur could respond, his private cell phone buzzed against the polished mahogany desk. The screen flashed: *Unknown Caller*.
Arthur tapped the speaker icon. "Speak."
A slow, mocking chuckle drifted through the line. It was Victoria, but the frightened, weeping woman from the hallway was completely gone. In her place was an icy, calculating predator.
*"Did you enjoy the show, Arthur?"* she asked, her voice silky and venomous. *"You thought you could throw me onto the street like a common stray? You think an eighty-second security clip is going to destroy me?"*
"You're calling from Julian Vance's office, aren't you?" Arthur said, his tone icy.
A brief pause on the other end, followed by a theatrical sigh. *"You always were sharp in business, darling. Such a shame you were so blind in your own bed. You should have checked the hallway cameras months ago. This wasn't the first time I disciplined your little brat, and it won't be the last if you don't play by my rules."*
Arthur's grip on the phone tightened until the tempered glass creaked under his fingers. "If you ever come near Mia again, Victoria, God himself won't be able to protect you from what I'll do."
*"Save the hero monologue for the press,"* she sneered. *"Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, my lawyers are holding a press conference outside the Supreme Court. I’ll be showing the media the bruises on my arms—the ones I made sure your security guards left when they dragged me out of your house. I’ll tell the world Arthur Sterling abuses his wife, uses hidden cameras to gaslight his family, and manipulates his traumatized daughter to ruin my reputation."*
"Nobody will believe you," Arthur snarled.
*"They won't have to believe me forever,"* Victoria whispered wickedly. *"They just have to doubt you long enough for the markets to open. Goodbye, Arthur. Give Mia a kiss for me. Tell her that dress looked much better in shreds."*
May you like
The call went dead.
