Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Shadow

By eight in the morning, the front steps of the Supreme Court building were swarming with news vans, flashing camera lights, and aggressive reporters holding microphones.
Victoria stood before the press pack looking like a tragic saint. She wore a high-collared black designer coat, her hair pulled back into an austere bun, devoid of jewelry. Dark cosmetic bruising had been masterfully applied around her wrists and the side of her neck. Beside her stood Julian Vance—tall, impeccably groomed, with the predatory smile of an assassin in a tailored three-piece suit.
"For fourteen months, I endured silent torment behind the gilded gates of the Sterling estate," Victoria sobbed convincingly into a forest of microphones, dabbing her eyes with a white linen handkerchief. "My husband, Arthur Sterling, is a man consumed by paranoia and control. When his daughter Mia became emotionally unstable yesterday, destroying her own clothes in a fit of rage, Arthur turned his fury upon me. He fabricated video footage, had his private militia physically assault me, and threw me into the street without a penny."
Julian Vance stepped up to the microphone, his deep baritone projecting authority. "As Mrs. Sterling’s legal representative and corporate trustee, we have officially petitioned the Family Court for emergency protective custody of Mia Sterling, citing an unsafe household managed by a violent father. Furthermore, we are filing a complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission to freeze Arthur Sterling’s executive authority over Sterling Logistics until a full psychiatric evaluation is conducted."
The reporters erupted into frantic shouting, cameras flashing furiously.
Inside the Sterling Logistics boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Sterling Tower, Arthur watched the live broadcast on the wall monitor. Around the long glass conference table sat the seven senior board members, their faces pale, watching their company's stock ticker plummet six percent in early pre-market trading.
"Arthur, this is a catastrophe!" exclaimed Harrison Croft, the oldest board member. "The market is devouring us! If Child Protective Services launches an investigation and Vance freezes your voting rights, our stock will collapse before the closing bell!"
"Silence," Arthur said.
The boardroom fell dead quiet. Arthur didn't look like a man under siege. He sat at the head of the table in a bespoke charcoal suit, his eyes sharp, calculating, completely composed.
Beside him sat not only Thomas Vance, but also Marcus Kane—the most ruthless, elite private intelligence operative in the country, whom Arthur had retained at midnight.
"Marcus," Arthur said calmly. "Is the feed ready?"
Marcus, a scarred man with cold gray eyes and a tablet in hand, gave a short nod. "We have tapped into the Supreme Court press pool's satellite uplink. We control the primary digital broadcast feed distributed to all major networks. We also have Victoria’s encrypted cloud server fully mirrored."
Arthur stood up, walking to the head of the table. "Julian Vance thinks he's playing chess with corporate bylaws. He forgot that Sterling Logistics owns the telecommunications infrastructure that powers fifty percent of his hedge fund's server farms."
Arthur looked at Harrison Croft. "You want to save the stock, Harrison? Watch this."
Arthur turned to Marcus. "Override the broadcast."
Back on the courthouse steps, Julian Vance was basking in the media frenzy. "We demand justice for Victoria Sterling, and we call upon the authorities to—"
Suddenly, the massive LED public information screens flanking the courthouse plaza glitched. The audio from Julian's microphone cut out with a deafening screech of feedback.
Every news network's live broadcast suddenly switched from Victoria’s tearful face to a split screen.
On the left side: the crystal-clear security footage of Victoria pinning seven-year-old Mia to the floor, deliberately taking shears to her late mother's dress, and threatening to incinerate her toys. The audio blared across the public plaza through the news vans' own speakers at deafening volume: *"I’ll make sure your rabbit goes into the incinerator next! And then I’ll send you away where no one will ever visit you!"*
On the right side of the screen: high-resolution bank wire transfers dated over the past six months, showing $4.2 million systematically drained from Mia Sterling's educational trust fund directly into an offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands under the name *Vance Capital Holdings*.
The courthouse plaza went dead silent.
The reporters froze. Julian Vance’s smug smile vanished, replaced by an expression of sheer, unadulterated panic. Victoria looked up at the giant LED screen above her head, her face twisting into horror as her own voice boomed across the entire city block.
Then, Arthur's voice cut through the media feed, broadcast directly from the boardroom:
*"Members of the press. This is Arthur Sterling. You are watching the premeditated extortion and abuse orchestrated by Victoria Vance-Dupont and Julian Vance. At this very moment, federal agents from the Financial Crimes Unit are arriving at Mr. Vance's hedge fund. Have a pleasant morning."*
Victoria took a stumbling step backward. Before she could flee down the granite steps, four unmarked black SUVs screeched to a halt along the curb. Eight federal agents in blue windbreakers with yellow "FBI" lettering surged out, weapons unholstered.
"Victoria Sterling! Julian Vance! Stand where you are!" the lead agent barked.
May you like
The reporters went wild, their cameras capturing every second of the spectacular, live-televised collapse of Victoria’s web of lies.
