Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

"Yesterday at 3:00 PM," Arthur said, his voice ringing across the ballroom like a war horn, "Sterling Capital acquired eighty-five percent of the debt notes of the Finch Psychiatric Institute. Along with that debt came complete access to Dr. Finch’s internal digital archives, billing records, and personal communications."

Arthur signaled the technical booth at the back of the ballroom.

The massive projection screens that had been displaying the charity’s donation goals suddenly switched.

Audio began to play from the overhead speakers—crisp, incontrovertible:

*"Dr. Finch, this is Julian Vance. We need Clara Sterling’s medical history fabricated immediately. Add notes indicating schizophrenia, violent episodes, and genetic instability in the daughter. Victoria needs a medical pretext for the emergency custody petition."*

Dr. Finch's recorded voice replied: *"That kind of forgery will cost at least two million, Julian. If the state medical board finds out—"*

*"You’ll have five million wired to your Zurich account by midnight. Just forge the signatures and backdate the hospital stamps to 2021."*

The ballroom was paralyzed.

Dr. Finch collapsed back against a table, his hands shaking violently. "No... no, that's private... that's attorney-client privilege—"

"There is no privilege in a criminal conspiracy to kidnap a child," Arthur thundered, stepping directly into Victoria’s personal space. His towering presence made her look microscopic beneath the crystal chandeliers. "Judge Callahan signed that emergency writ based on forged medical evidence. Forty-five minutes ago, Judge Callahan was presented with these exact audio files. He revoked your writ, issued an arrest warrant for Dr. Finch, and escalated your bail revocation hearing to right now."

On cue, the front doors of the St. Regis ballroom burst open.

A squad of New York City police officers, flanked by state investigators, marched in with steel handcuffs drawn.

"Julian Vance! Alistair Finch! Victoria Sterling!" the police captain announced. "You are all under arrest for conspiracy, forgery, witness intimidation, and attempted unlawful abduction of a minor!"

Julian Vance backed away, his hands raised in surrender, cursing under his breath. "Victoria, you fool! You said you had this handled!"

Victoria lunged toward Julian, her manicured nails clawing at his face in a wild frenzy. "You promised me his company! You promised me I would have Clara’s fortune!"

The police moved in fast. Two officers grabbed Julian, slamming him against the marble pillar, while two female officers tackled Victoria to the plush carpet, wrenching her arms behind her back. The sickening *click* of the steel handcuffs echoed across the silent room.

As Victoria was hauled to her feet, her crimson gown torn at the shoulder, her eyes found Mia.

Mia was no longer hiding behind Evelyn.

The seven-year-old girl took three steady steps forward. She looked straight into the eyes of the woman who had terrorized her, who had shredded her mother's dress, who had tried to steal her family.

"My Mommy loved me," Mia said, her voice clear, small, but unbreakable. "And she was good. You will never, ever be my mother."

Victoria let out an unearthly scream of pure hatred as the officers dragged her toward the exit, her heels skidding across the polished floor until the doors slammed shut behind her.

Arthur walked over to Mia, kneeling before her. He gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "You were so brave, sweetheart."

"Daddy," Mia whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "Is it finally over?"

Arthur held her tight, looking toward Marcus Kane, who stood in the back of the room giving a somber, negative shake of his head.

Arthur closed his eyes. "Almost, baby. Almost."
