Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Gala

Though the federal raid had struck a devastating blow, the legal battlefield proved to be a labyrinth.

Two weeks had passed. Julian Vance had posted a monstrous fifteen-million-dollar cash bail, using his network of shadowy offshore connections. Victoria, leveraging a technical loophole in her prenuptial agreement regarding disputed wire transfers, managed to secure bail under house arrest with an ankle monitor, awaiting formal indictment.

She wasn't defeated; she was a wounded, rabid animal backed into a corner.

The annual Metropolitan Children’s Hospital Charity Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel. It was an event Clara had founded five years ago, and one that Arthur refused to hide from. He arrived holding Mia’s hand.

Mia wore a brand-new dress—not lavender, but a brilliant emerald green, sewn by an artisan Clara had trained years ago. Mia held her head high. Though the trauma of Victoria’s abuse still haunted her dreams, Arthur had spent every waking hour by her side, reinforcing her confidence, proving to her that she was cherished and safe.

The society crowd, once uncertain, parted with murmurs of sympathy and respect as Arthur and Mia walked through the crystal chandelier-lit hall. Arthur’s mother, Evelyn, walked proudly on their right, holding Mia's other hand.

"Arthur," Evelyn murmured softly, "the board reported the stock rebounded twelve percent today. The public support for Mia is overwhelming."

"It won't be over until Victoria is behind bars for good, Mother," Arthur replied, scanning the perimeter. His private security team, dressed in sharp tuxedos, were stationed at every exit.

Suddenly, a commotion erupted near the service entrance behind the grand stage.

The heavy double doors swung open. Victoria stepped into the ballroom.

A collective gasp echoed across the three hundred elite guests. Victoria was not in prison attire. She wore a dramatic crimson gown, her hair flowing, completely defying the scandal that bore her name. Clutched in her hand was a thick blue binder, and walking beside her was a burly man in a medical coat—Dr. Alistair Finch, a notoriously corrupt private psychiatrist whose license had been challenged multiple times.

"Ladies and gentlemen! Forgive the interruption!" Victoria announced, her voice echoing through the opulent ballroom. She marched directly toward the stage, ignoring the security guards who moved to intercept her. Julian Vance appeared from the gallery shadows, flanked by four high-priced corporate bodyguards who physically blocked Arthur's security from stepping forward.

"Don't touch me!" Victoria hissed at Gideon, holding up a legal writ. "This is an active court-sanctioned emergency evidentiary presentation under Section 12 of the Child Welfare Emergency Act! Any interference is a federal felony!"

Arthur placed Mia behind his mother, stepping forward into the center of the dance floor, his eyes burning like twin suns. "You have five seconds to leave this building on your own feet, Victoria."

"Not before I expose the truth, Arthur!" Victoria sneered, turning to the wealthy elite of New York. "You all think Arthur Sterling is a grieving saint! You think I am the villain! But Dr. Finch has the psychiatric medical records from Clara Sterling’s final months!"

The room went completely still. Arthur’s heart stopped. *Clara's medical records?*

Dr. Finch stepped forward, clearing his throat. "Clara Sterling was diagnosed with severe postpartum-induced psychiatric instability. These records prove she suffered delusions, and that the child, Mia Sterling, carries an inherited genetic psychological disorder prone to violent self-harm and fabrication of abuse! The ruined dress was not destroyed by Victoria—it was shredded by Mia herself during a psychotic breakdown, and Arthur has manipulated digital footage using deepfake technology to frame my client to cover up his family's dark bloodline!"

Murmurs of shock rippled through the guests. Cameras from society bloggers flashed relentlessly.

"How dare you," Evelyn gasped, trembling with aristocratic outrage. "How dare you speak Clara's name with such filthy lies!"

"They aren't lies, Evelyn!" Victoria screamed, triumphant, waving the binder. "I am here to save this child from her father’s web of deception! By order of this emergency writ signed by Judge Callahan two hours ago, I have been granted temporary protective custody to place Mia into immediate clinical observation!"

Two uniformed bailiffs emerged from behind Julian Vance, moving directly toward little Mia.

Mia let out a terrified cry, clutching Evelyn’s gown.

Arthur didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a gold-plated flash drive.

"You really should have checked who bought the Finch Psychiatric Clinic yesterday afternoon, Victoria," Arthur said.

Dr. Finch’s face instantly drained of color. "What... what did you say?"
