Chapter 58 - The Sister's Redemption

The house on High Street—my parents' home, the place where Sarah and her family had forced my parents out—stood dark and ominous under the early morning drizzle.
Sarah walked beside me, her steps hesitant as we approached the front porch. She pulled a brass key from her pocket, her hand shaking violently as she slid it into the lock of the front door she had once slammed in my face.
"I locked the basement door three days ago," Sarah whispered, tears glistening in her eyes. "Vance’s lawyer told Kyle they were storing architectural blueprints for the Pickerington build down there. Kyle didn't ask questions because Vance gave him a ten-thousand-dollar cash advance. I should have known... God, Martha, I should have known."
"You know now," I replied softly, taking the key from her hand and turning the deadbolt. "Now help us end this."
Miller’s tactical team swept the ground floor in absolute silence, weapon lights carving beams through the familiar living room. Everything was just as Sarah had left it during her chaotic flight—scattered toys, unwashed coffee mugs, the wreckage of a family unraveling in real-time.
At the end of the hallway, the heavy wood door leading to the cellar stood slightly ajar.
A sliver of pale yellow light leaked up from the concrete stairs.
Miller held up a fist, signaling his operators to freeze. Faint sounds of rhythmic scraping and the hum of an industrial rotary saw drifted up from the depths of the basement floor.
Dad stepped up beside Miller, tapping his shoulder and gesturing with two fingers toward the old coal chute behind the garage. Dad was telling him there was a secondary flanking route behind the furnace.
May you like
Miller nodded, signaling two tactical agents to circle the exterior while he, Von Berg, Dad, and I moved silently down the wooden steps, descending into the belly of our family home.
