Chapter 53 - The Sister's Confession

"Sarah?" I said, stunned. The entire alleyway—Miller, Dad, Mom, even the Swiss envoy—fell completely silent as my voice echoed through the cold rain.
"They're coming for us," Sarah wept, her voice distorted by absolute panic. The sound of children crying softly echoed in the background. "Kyle took the kids and tried to run, but there are men watching the motel. They're going to kill us, Martha! They’re going to kill us all!"
"Where are you, Sarah?" I demanded, gesturing frantically to Miller, who immediately signaled his tech operator to trace the call. "Why would anyone want to hurt you? You took Mom and Dad's house! You gave Vance everything!"
"I didn't know!" she screamed into the receiver. "When Kyle signed the second mortgage on Mom and Dad’s house... Vance’s lawyer made him bring in a notary box from Dad’s old tool shed! Vance told Kyle that if he brought over Dad’s old thumbprint ink pad from the workshop—the one Dad used when he notarized mechanic title transfers—Vance would forgive our three-hundred-thousand-dollar debt on the Pickerington house!"
My stomach plummeted through the wet asphalt.
"You stole Dad's thumbprint?" Dad gasped, hearing the words over the speaker. "Sarah... you gave Vance my fingerprint stamp?"
"Kyle did it!" Sarah wailed, drowning in regret and terror. "He pressed Dad's old mechanical signature seal onto three blank power-of-attorney sheets! Vance said it was just to release the equity on the garage! But Kyle found the duplicate copies an hour ago under the lining of his truck seat. It wasn't for the garage... it was an international deed of assignment! They used Dad's print to open the Panama corporation!"
Envoy Von Berg’s posture shifted entirely. His fingers tightened on his leather folder as he listened to Sarah's confession echoing in the damp night air.
"Where is your husband now?" Miller barked into my phone.
"He’s at the abandoned gravel pit off Route 104," Sarah sobbed. "Vance’s men told him to bring the remaining original paper sheets in exchange for five hundred thousand dollars in cash so we could leave the country. But Kyle saw them setting up snipers around the weigh station. He’s hiding in the concrete silo with the kids!"
"She's telling the truth," Miller’s tech operator shouted from the van. "Cell tower ping matches a low-power relay tower just outside Grove City, near the Route 104 quarry! And satellite thermal is picking up three armed vehicles idling outside the main quarry gates!"
Von Berg turned to Miller, his Swiss authority suddenly taking a back seat to the brutal reality of an imminent execution. "Agent Miller. If those original sheets exist with the forged mechanical stamp, they are the only evidence that can invalidate the Red Notice and prove Arthur Bennett’s innocence."

"Then we don't argue over jurisdiction anymore," Miller snapped, chambering a round into his sidearm. "We take everyone down to the quarry."
