Chapter 33 - The Sister's Desperate Bargain

The burner phone sitting on the conference table vibrated aggressively against the wood, skittering across the surface like an angry beetle.

Agent Miller, who had been listening quietly from the doorway, made a sharp gesture with his hand. "Don't touch it yet. We're tracing the incoming tower."

He signaled a technician seated at a portable monitoring console. After five seconds, the technician nodded. "Burner-to-burner connection, pinging off a cell tower near the Columbus Zoo. It’s domestic."

Agent Miller hit the speakerphone button. "Go ahead, Miss Bennett."

I leaned over the table, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Hello?"

"Madison? Oh God, Madison, please tell me you're there!"

It was Chloe. Her voice was shrill, breathless, and laced with hysterical terror. In the background, I could hear the muffled, frantic crying of her two young boys and the aggressive rumble of an unfamiliar car engine.

"Chloe? Where are you?" I demanded.

"They came to the house, Madison! Two men in dark suits with crowbars! They kicked in the side door on High Street while the boys were eating dinner!" Chloe sobbed, her words tumbling over one another in a chaotic rush. "They tore the place apart! They tore the floorboards out of the hallway! They were looking for the green ledger and the brass key!"

"What brass key, Chloe?" Dad stepped forward, his voice booming over the speaker. "What did you take from your mother's cedar chest?"

"Dad? Dad, is that you?" Chloe wailed. "Dad, I didn't know, I swear to God I didn't know! Greg told me it was an old stock certificate! He said Victor Sterling was going to clear all of our debts and put two hundred thousand dollars into an escrow account for the boys' college if we brought him the brass key from Mom's jewelry box!"

"Where is Greg right now, Chloe?" I interrupted, my patience snapping. "Where is your husband?"

"He left us!" Chloe screamed, the sound echoing through the sterile safehouse room. "We were at the Shell station on Sawmill Road, and a black SUV pulled up behind us. Greg took the backpack with the paperwork and jumped into their car! He left me here with the kids and twenty dollars in my purse! He told me to drive south and not look back!"

I closed my eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. Even in the depths of her betrayal, even after she had driven our parents out of their home, stolen their documents, and handed our family’s fate to an oligarch on a silver platter, Chloe was still the victim in her own twisted narrative. But her children—my nephews—were innocent.

"Chloe, listen to me very carefully," I said, my voice steady and cold as iron. "Do you have the brass key with you, or did Greg take it?"

There was a brief pause on the line, punctuated by the sniffle of four-year-old Leo in the back seat.

"I... I didn't give it to him," Chloe whispered, her voice suddenly trembling with genuine fear. "Greg was screaming at me in the kitchen before the men arrived. I didn't trust him, Madison. I hid the brass key inside the lining of Leo’s car seat."

Agent Miller instantly pointed at the map on his screen, scribbling an address on a yellow pad and shoving it in front of me.

"Chloe," I said firmly. "Get back on Route 315. Drive south toward the Ohio State Medical Center parking garage, Level 4. There will be two marked state patrol cruisers waiting at the ramp. If you deviate from that route by a single block, Victor's men will find you before we do. Do you understand me?"

"Madison... I'm so sorry," she wept. "Please don't let them hurt my babies."

May you like

"Just drive, Chloe," I said, and disconnected the call.
