Chapter 55 - The Midnight Intercept

The quarry rose out of the darkness like a ruined fortress of limestone and crushed stone. Rain transformed the pit floor into a sea of thick, sucking mud. Flashlights flickered along the towering catwalks of the central gravel sorter.

"We have visual on the silo," Miller’s sniper relayed over the earpiece from a ridge five hundred yards out. "Target Kyle Vance—correction, Kyle Miller—is trapped on the upper platform of Silo Three. He has two children with him. We have three hostiles advancing up the iron staircase with rifles raised. They have suppression orders."

"Move in! Now!" Miller ordered.

Dad led Envoy Von Berg, two Swiss operators, and me through a narrow corrugated drainage pipe beneath the weigh station. Mud soaked through my boots, freezing my legs to the bone, but nobody slowed down. Dad moved with an astonishing purpose, his heavy flashlight cutting through the cobwebs and rust until we hit a heavy iron hatch secured by a rusted manual wheel.

"Hold on," Dad whispered, throwing his weight against the iron wheel. With a harsh screech of metal, the gear gave way, swinging open into the dark, cavernous hollow beneath the silo.

Above us, gunshots cracked like thunder.

The children shrieked in terror.

"Kyle!" Dad roared, ignoring every tactical protocol as he scrambled up the rusty interior ladder of the hopper. "Kyle, drop the chute lever!"

A hatch twenty feet above clattered open. A terrified, bruised face peeked through—my brother-in-law Kyle, his clothes shredded, clutching Sarah’s seven-year-old son against his chest while his nine-year-old daughter trembled behind him.

"Arthur?!" Kyle sobbed, his voice breaking in utter disbelief. "Arthur, they’re going to shoot us!"

"Hand me the kids!" Dad shouted, stretching his arms toward the opening.

A bullet slammed into the iron wall above Kyle’s head, showering sparks into the silo. Kyle didn't hesitate. He lowered his daughter down into Dad's waiting arms, then handed down his son. Dad caught them both, passing them immediately to me and the Swiss guards.

"The papers!" Von Berg shouted up into the dark. "Where are the forged assignment sheets?"

Kyle reached inside his jacket and pulled out a water-damaged manila envelope stamped with Arthur Bennett’s ink seal. "Here! It’s all here! The original mechanical stamps, Vance’s offshore wire agreements, everything!"

Before Kyle could descend, an armed operative in black tactical gear breached the upper catwalk door, aiming an automatic rifle directly down at Kyle's head.

"Drop it!" the gunman shouted.

A single suppressed shot echoed through the hollow steel chamber. The operative collapsed backward off the catwalk, falling fifty feet into the gravel pit below.

On the far ridge, Miller’s sniper calmly called over the radio: "Hostile down. Silo Three clear."
