Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Ambush

At 9:45 AM, the 52nd-floor boardroom was packed with Meridian Pay’s twelve board members. Coffee was poured, croissants sat untouched on porcelain plates, and a tense, suffocating hush hung over the polished mahogany table.
Victor Sterling sat at the head of the table, exuding quiet authority. On his right was Arthur Vance, Ethan’s distant uncle who had secured an advisory seat, and several institutional investors whose loyalties had always leaned toward Victor’s wealth.
I walked through the double doors at precisely 9:58 AM.
I wore an impeccably tailored black Saint Laurent suit, red lipstick, and diamond studs. Lucas walked two paces behind me, carrying a stack of embossed black leather dossiers. Evelyn Vance entered quietly, setting up an encrypted presentation monitor at the far end of the room.
Victor stood up, smiling with forced warmth. “Clara. We are glad you found the strength to attend. Please, sit. We can make this transition as dignified and private as possible.”
“Thank you, Victor,” I said smoothly, taking my seat directly across from him. “Before we begin the vote on my supposed medical leave, I believe there are a few administrative matters that require unanimous board attention.”
Victor’s eyebrows twitched slightly. “Administrative matters? Clara, the agenda for this extraordinary session is strictly focused on interim leadership—”
“The agenda is whatever the Chairman and founder says it is, Victor,” I cut in, my voice ringing clear and commanding across the room.
Lucas moved around the table with mechanical efficiency, slapping a heavy black dossier in front of every single board member. The thud of the documents hitting the polished wood sounded like a gavel falling.
“What is this nonsense?” Arthur Vance barked, flipping open the first page.
“That,” I announced, standing up, “is the forensic paper trail of *Aegis Global Ventures* and *Apex Horizon*. Over the last thirty-six months, our senior director, Victor Sterling, in conspiracy with former VP of Operations Ethan Vance, has embezzled forty-two million dollars from Meridian’s primary escrow pool.”
A collective gasp swept through the room. Several directors sat bolt upright, flipping furiously through the bank statements, wire transfers, and forged authorization signatures.
Victor’s face turned from benevolent calm to a deep, mottled crimson. “This is outrageous! These are fabrications! Clara is clearly suffering from extreme emotional distress due to her husband’s marital indiscretion!”

“Turn to page forty-seven, gentlemen,” Evelyn’s calm voice cut through Victor’s shouting. On the wall monitor, a recorded video call materialized. It was Ethan Vance, weeping in his orange jumpsuit, detailing under federal oath every conversation, every off-book transaction, and every meeting he had held with Victor at the Pacific-Union Club.
The silence that followed was absolute.
