Chapter 36 - The Poisoned Chalice

The words hit the chamber with the force of an artillery shell.

Julian’s weapon moved before my mind could fully process the accusation, his barrel snapping instantly toward Caspian Vance’s forehead. "Don't move a muscle, Vance."

Vance did not raise his hands. His expression remained entirely composed, though a razor-thin smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. He leaned casually on his silver-topped cane.

"A predictable gambit, Eleanor," Vance said smoothly. "Distract the child with an imaginary betrayal to cover your own catastrophic failure."

"He was on the island, Clara," Eleanor stated, rising from her chair, her gaze never wavering from Vance. "When your brother tracked Arthur to the Four Seasons in Maui, who do you think authorized the satellite black-out that delayed Julian’s arrival by forty-eight hours? Who do you think transferred forty million dollars into Arthur’s offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands to ensure he stayed at the resort long enough to sign over your power of attorney?"

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits. "He’s right about the satellite glitch. When I was running surveillance in Honolulu, our tracking beacon on Arthur vanished for two full days. I thought it was an encrypted VPN protocol set by Sterling's hackers."

"It wasn't Sterling," Eleanor said coldly. "Arthur was a mediocre broker with high-class tastes and zero tactical acumen. He couldn't bypass an airport baggage scanner, let alone a tier-one orbital transponder. Caspian used Arthur as bait. He wanted you to catch Arthur, Clara. He *needed* you to expose the Hawaiian affair."

My blood ran cold. The pieces of the puzzle began to violently rearrange themselves in my mind.

"Why?" I demanded, turning slowly toward Vance. "Why engineer my husband's public humiliation? Why lead me down the rabbit hole to Singapore and Zurich?"

"Because you were dormant, my dear Clara," Vance said, his voice dropping the polite facade, revealing an icy, ruthless core. "You were living in suburban luxury, painting watercolors and attending charity galas in Manhattan, letting the immense power of the Kensington bloodline rot in corporate index funds. We needed a firestorm to wake the dragon."

He tapped his cane once on the marble.

A sharp clatter echoed from the shadows above the cathedral arches. Six laser target points danced across Eleanor’s chest and Julian’s shoulders. Mercenaries in matte-black armor stepped out onto the overhead walkways, their weapons leveled.

"Arthur’s greed was an instrument," Vance continued, stepping backward toward the security console. "I hired that woman in Maui. I leaked his flight itinerary to your brother’s encrypted server. I *gave* you the scent, Clara! And you hunted Arthur down with magnificent ruthlessness. You destroyed Sterling Enterprises. You cracked the Iron Registry. You proved that you are the most dangerous Kensington in four generations."

"And now you need me to open the Sovereign Archive," I whispered, realizing the true scope of his design. "Because Eleanor locked you out."

"She didn't just lock me out," Vance sneered, his mask of aristocratic gentility completely gone. "She stole the Master Cipher—the private keys that control the liquidity of every central bank in Europe. The Council is dying, Clara. The old world order is crumbling under populist noise and sovereign debt. With that cipher, we can reset the global board. With you at my side as the legitimate Kensington Matriarch, no government on earth could question our authority."

"And if I refuse?" I asked.

May you like

Vance sighed, shaking his head with mock sadness. "Your brother dies on that floor. Your mother dies in this vault. And you will be kept in a private facility in Lucerne until you sign the necessary instruments. Bloodline sovereignty requires sacrifice, Clara. Even yours."

Julian didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger.
