Chapter 17 - The Venetian Masquerade

The ring of that satellite phone was steady, rhythmic, and chillingly confident. It sounded like an iron bell tolling in an empty cathedral.
I walked past Ethan, who was curled in a fetal position against the server casing, sobbing into his hands. I ignored Vanessa, who was being cuffed by Marcus with heavy zip-ties. Julian stood guard at the doorway, breathing heavily, his eyes fixed on the device.
I reached out and lifted the heavy receiver.
"Congratulations, Clara," the voice said.
This time, there was no digital distortion. No acoustic filters. It was the smooth, velvet baritone that used to read me bedtime stories about kings and conquered empires before I went to sleep in our Greenwich mansion.
Arthur Kensington. Alive.
"You took your time, Father," I said, leaning against the server cabinet, my voice steady despite the seismic tremor rocking my core. "Thirty billion dollars. Gone. Sealed in an international escrow vault. By tomorrow morning, every financial intelligence agency from London to Tokyo will have your cryptographic fingerprints."
A warm, genuine laugh echoed from the other end of the line.
"Did you really believe the money was the prize, Clara?" Arthur said, his tone dripping with the patronizing pride he used to display when I won high school debate championships. "You always were a tactical prodigy. You neutralized Victor. You broke Ethan like the cheap ceramic toy he was. And now you’ve demonstrated to every intelligence directorate on Earth that you possess the ultimate administrative access to the global financial plumbing."
My eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
"Meridian was never a hedge fund, sweetheart," Arthur murmured, the sound of gentle waves lapping against a ship’s hull audible in the background. "It was a live-fire laboratory. I needed to know if my daughter had the stomach for absolute dominion. If you had folded, if you had let Ethan and Vanessa take that money, I would have let you drown with the wreckage. But you fought back. You outmaneuvered my traps. You seized the board."
"I’m sending the authorities to you," I warned, gripping the receiver until my fingers turned white. "We have the IP origin. We tracked the satellite handshake to a vessel moving through the Adriatic Sea toward Venice."
"Then don't send the authorities, Clara," Arthur said softly, his voice dropping into an intimate whisper. "Come yourself. Tomorrow night. Palazzo Malipiero on the Grand Canal. It’s Carnival week. Wear a mask. Bring Julian if you must. But leave the law behind."
"Why would I ever come to you?"
"Because," Arthur replied, his words dropping like lead weights into my stomach, "the files you sent to the Department of Justice don't just incriminate me. They contain a digital trigger Victor Sterling planted three years ago. If you don't receive the physical decryption key from my hand by midnight tomorrow, the automated system will release evidence proving that *you* signed off on the illegal laundering channels during your first year as CEO."
"That's a lie," I breathed.
"Is it?" Arthur chuckled. "Check your early corporate filings, Clara. Who do you think signed the offshore authorization for the Kauai trust when Ethan asked you to countersign that joint tax return three years ago? You trusted your husband. And in our world, trust is a terminal offense. Venice, Clara. Tomorrow night. Let us see if you are truly ready to take the Kensington crown."
The line went dead.
Julian walked over to me, placing a hand on my trembling shoulder. "What did he say?"
I lowered the receiver, looking down at Ethan, who looked up at me with eyes full of pathetic, pleading terror.
"He said the game is only beginning," I whispered.
I turned to Marcus. "Take Ethan and Vanessa. Hand them over to the Swiss federal police along with the local surveillance footage. Leave their names tied to every unauthorized entry code in this facility."
"Clara, please!" Ethan cried, crawling toward me, grabbing at the hem of my coat. "Clara, I love you! I was terrified! He threatened to ruin me! You know what he’s capable of!"
I pulled my coat from his grasp with effortless disdain, looking down at the man I had shared my bed with for half a decade.
"I don't know who you are, Ethan," I said, my voice completely devoid of warmth. "And frankly, neither do you. Enjoy the Swiss penitentiary system. I hear the winters are very long."

Without looking back, I turned to my brother. "Julian. Call the jet. We’re going to Venice."
