Chapter 28 - The Lion City Infiltration

The equatorial heat of Singapore hit us like a damp wool blanket the moment the cabin door of the Gulfstream opened at Seletar Airport. It was dawn. The sky was an incandescent bruised purple, the towering silhouettes of the Marina Bay skyline shimmering through the humid haze.

We had changed into tailored business attire inside the jet. I wore an ivory silk suit that Eleanor had provided—crisp, elegant, the armor of a woman about to reclaim her throne. Julian was in a bespoke charcoal blazer, his bandaged arm concealed beneath the sleeve. Eleanor looked every inch the dowager empress of global finance, her grey hair swept back into an immaculate chignon, dark sunglasses shielding her eyes.

"The Marina Bay Apex Vault operates under special diplomatic sovereignty," Evelyn briefed us as our black Mercedes Maybach glided down the East Coast Parkway. "It was established under an obscure 1968 treaty provision. No local police, no Interpol, no judicial warrants can breach the vault without the consent of the Board of Governors. The only thing that speaks inside those doors is the biometric key."

"And Marcus's legal team?" I asked.

"Judge Vance signed the provisional release order forty-five minutes ago in New York," Evelyn reported, her eyes glued to her tablet. "Marcus has been released into the custody of his private security detail. A Gulfstream G700 registered to a Panamanian front company took off from JFK thirty minutes later. They're routing through Dubai to refuel. Marcus will be in Singapore in fourteen hours."

"Which gives us a twelve-hour lead," Julian said, leaning forward. "We drain the trust, transfer the liquid reserves into the Kensington charitable foundation, and hand the decrypted ledger over to the Department of Justice."

"The Department of Justice is compromised, Julian," Eleanor corrected coldly. "We do not hand the ledger to the DOJ. We release the entire database simultaneously to seventy-four international media outlets via an encrypted torrent swarm. When everyone is guilty, no single corrupt official can bury the story to save themselves."

Ten minutes later, the Maybach pulled into the subterranean VIP entrance of the Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 3.

We were met at the elevator by an elderly Swiss gentleman with silver hair, dressed in a double-breasted morning suit. His name was Herr Von Berg, the Senior Custodian of the Apex Vault.

When his eyes fell upon Eleanor, he went rigid, his breath hitching.

"Madame Kensington," he whispered in immaculate German. "We... we were informed you were deceased twenty-one years ago."

"Reports of my demise were an operational necessity, Von Berg," Eleanor replied smoothly, extending her gloved hand. "I am here with my daughter, Clara, to execute a total asset recall under Protocol Nine."

Von Berg’s composure cracked, sweat beading upon his forehead. "Protocol Nine? Madame, that initiates an immediate liquidation of all underlying sovereign bonds. The shock to the offshore markets—"

"Will be catastrophic," Eleanor finished his sentence with a serene smile. "Take us down."

The private lift descended seventy feet below sea level, into a subterranean vault reinforced with three-foot-thick titanium-carbide plating. The air was frigid, hummed with the sound of liquid-nitrogen cooling systems for the central mainframe.

At the center of the vault stood a circular black pedestal with two optical biometric scanners and two cryptographic card slots.

"Madame Eleanor Kensington. Madame Clara Kensington," Von Berg announced to the automated system, his voice echoing off the reinforced walls. "Initiating Protocol Nine verification."

Eleanor stepped forward, resting her right palm on the glass scanner. A beam of azure light swept over her skin.

`PRIMARY SIGNATORY IDENTIFIED: ELEANOR KENSINGTON. CLEARANCE LEVEL: ARCHITECT ZERO.`

"Your turn, Clara," Eleanor whispered, stepping aside.

My boots clicked against the polished steel floor. I looked down at the glowing scanner. This was the moment. The culmination of my father's lies, Marcus’s deceit, and my mother’s twenty-year ghost game. Once I pressed my hand down, the fourteen billion dollars that Marcus had sold his soul to steal would vanish into the public sphere, and the Iron Registry would be stripped naked before the world.

I placed my palm against the glass.

The blue light scanned my hand.

`SECONDARY SIGNATORY IDENTIFIED: CLARA KENSINGTON.`

`BIOMETRIC MATCH: 99.9%.`

`PROTOCOL NINE INITIATED. COMMENCING FULL ASSET RECALL.`

A massive digital counter on the wall began to tick down from sixty seconds.

"It's done," Julian whispered, a broad grin finally breaking across his exhausted face. "We did it."

Then, the heavy blast doors behind us hissed open with a sharp expulsion of pressurized air.

"I’m afraid nothing is ever that simple, Clara," a familiar, silk-smooth voice echoed through the vault.

I froze.

I turned around slowly.

Standing in the vault doorway, dressed in a pristine navy suit, his dark hair immaculately combed, was Marcus Sterling.

He was not in Dubai. He was not thirty thousand feet over the Atlantic.

May you like

He was here. And beside him stood eight men armed with tactical submachine guns, their laser sights painting red dots across Julian’s chest.
