Chapter 4 - The Honolulu Confession

The federal holding facility on the outskirts of Honolulu smelled of industrial floor stripper, cold metal, and despair.

Ethan sat on the other side of the reinforced glass partition, clad in an orange detainee jumpsuit that hung loosely from his frame. The golden suntan he had acquired while drinking Mai Tais with Madison Cole looked sickly under the fluorescent lights. His manicured hair was greasy, and his hands trembled as he picked up the heavy plastic receiver.

I sat down, keeping my posture regal and pristine in an ivory Valentino blazer. I picked up the receiver and waited.

“Clara, please,” Ethan choked out, pressing his palm flat against the scratched glass. “You have to drop the wire fraud charges. The federal prosecutors won’t even grant me bail! They’re treating me like a cartel boss! Madison’s father won’t take my calls. Madison blocked my number!”

“Madison is currently being escorted out of Hawaii by state marshals on a subpoena for interstate banking fraud,” I said, my tone as flat as ice. “Her father is already scrubbing her name from the trust fund to save his own seat. You’re on your own, Ethan.”

“I made a mistake, Clara! It was just sex! It was the stress, the pressure of living in your shadow—”

“Save the pathetic monologue for your public defender,” I interrupted sharply. “I’m not here about Madison Cole. I’m here about Aegis Global Ventures.”

The color instantly drained from Ethan’s face. His jaw went slack, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish.

“You... you know?” he stammered.

“I know every dollar, every offshore transfer, and every disguised invoice,” I leaned closer, my gaze piercing straight into his soul. “I know that Victor Sterling promised you thirty million dollars and the title of co-CEO once I was ousted. But what you didn't realize, Ethan, because you never understood finance, is that clause seven of the Aegis partnership agreement contains an indemnity covenant. Did you actually read what you signed?”

Ethan’s breathing hitched. “What are you talking about?”

“Victor structured Aegis so that if any federal audit was initiated, full criminal liability for unauthorized corporate transfer defaulted entirely to the operating partner,” I said quietly. “You. Victor didn't make you a partner, Ethan. He made you the designated fall guy. When the FBI raids Meridian’s auxiliary servers tomorrow, your signature is the only one on the fraudulent bank drafts.”

Tears welled up in Ethan’s bloodshot eyes. He looked around the barren room, realizing the catastrophic reality of his situation. “He lied to me... Victor promised me I’d be untouchable!”

“You are very touchable,” I replied. “Fifteen to twenty years in federal prison, to be precise. Unless, of course, you hand me the master key to Victor’s offshore ledger before I fly back to San Francisco.”

Ethan collapsed forward against the counter, weeping openly. “The hard drive... it’s behind the electrical panel in our guest cottage in Marin County. The password is the date we founded Meridian. Clara, please... tell them I cooperated. Don't leave me here!”

I hung up the receiver, stood up, and adjusted my cuffs without giving him another glance.
