Chapter 5 - The Power Play

The air between the two men crackled with palpable tension. Julian Vance was used to intimidating opponents across mahogany conference tables with multi-million-dollar lawsuits and veiled threats of corporate ruin. But Ethan Walker didn't flinch. Running a regional freight empire meant Ethan had spent years dealing with angry union reps, defaulting suppliers, and broken-down transport rigs in the dead of winter. A slick corporate attorney in a custom tuxedo didn't faze him in the least.

"Don't worry about my navigation, Julian," Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave, steady and dangerously calm. "I always manage to find what I’m looking for. And unlike some people, I know when I'm trespassing."

Julian’s smile tightened into a thin, bloodless line. He knew the double entendre hit its mark. "Mr. Walker, you’re playing in waters far deeper than your regional trucking lanes. Claire’s family and my firm have shaped the legal and commercial landscape of West Michigan for three generations. Men like you—self-made mechanics and logistics upstarts—come and go. We stay."

Claire stepped between them, her eyes flashing with fury. "Enough, Julian! You do not speak to my guests that way. And you certainly do not speak *for* me."

"I’m just looking out for your reputation, Claire," Julian purred, though a flicker of genuine panic crossed his eyes at her public defiance. "Your father wouldn't want you associating with—"

"My father can speak for himself, just like I can," Claire cut him off, her voice ringing clear and sharp across the wooden deck. "Now, walk away, Julian. Before I decide to make *your* evening as memorable as Ethan’s."

Julian glared at Ethan one last time, a silent promise of retaliation hanging heavily in the air, before turning on his heel and disappearing back through the glass doors.

The deck fell silent again, save for the rhythmic crashing of the lake waves against the shore.

Claire let out a ragged breath, pressing her fingers against her temples. "I am so sorry, Ethan. Julian is... he’s a professional arrangement my father has been trying to solidify for two years. It’s exhausting."

"An arrangement?" Ethan asked gently.

"Business. Politics. Old money keeping it in the family," she said bitterly, looking out over the dark water. "My family owns Bennett Industrial Holdings—we manufacture heavy machinery parts. Julian’s firm handles our litigation. My father thinks merging our circles is the ultimate business strategy."

Ethan stared at her, a sudden piece of the puzzle falling into place. "Heavy machinery parts? Walker Freight hauls industrial steel and hydraulic components across three states every single week. Bennett Industrial is one of my biggest municipal shipping accounts."

Claire blinked, turning to look at him in shock. "Wait. You’re *the* Walker Freight? The company my father signed a five-year exclusivity contract with last month?"

Ethan couldn't help the small, lopsided grin that crept onto his face. "Guilty as charged. I suppose that makes us business associates."

Claire burst out laughing—that bright, infectious sound that seemed to heal every rough edge of the evening. "Oh, this is rich. My father has been raving about your company’s efficiency for weeks. If he knew you were the man who hijacked the Harrison wedding and stared down Julian Vance on a balcony, he’d probably double your contract."

"Then let’s keep our business and our social blunders strictly confidential," Ethan murmured, taking a half-step closer to her. The space between them suddenly felt charged with an electric, undeniable intimacy.

Claire’s laughter subsided into a soft, breathy whisper. "Deal."
