Chapter 4 - Secrets by the Lake

The cool lake breeze hit them as they stepped out onto the secluded wooden deck. Below them, the dark water of Lake Michigan rippled under a blanket of stars, catching the distant, glittering lights of the resort.
Claire let out a long, shuddering breath, her hands resting on the wooden railing. The tension that had held her shoulders rigid inside the tent seemed to melt away, leaving behind a fragile, exhausted vulnerability.
"I apologize for Julian," Claire said quietly, staring out at the dark horizon. "He has a way of making every social event feel like a corporate board meeting."
"Is he always like that?" Ethan asked, leaning against the railing a few feet away, keeping a respectful distance while maintaining a steady presence.
"Only when he feels like he’s losing control of something—or someone," she murmured. She turned her head to look at him, the moonlight catching the fine lines of her face. "You didn't have to step in back there."
"I didn't mind," Ethan said honestly. "Besides, I'm used to handling aggressive obstacles. Usually, they have eighteen wheels and air brakes, but arrogant lawyers aren't that different."
Claire laughed—that same genuine, melodic laugh that had first echoed across Emily and Jason’s reception room. The sound chased away the lingering chill of Julian’s presence.
"You really own a freight company?" she asked, leaning back against the railing and crossing her arms. "Most logistics owners I’ve met are crusty old men who yell at dispatchers over speakerphone while smoking cheap cigars."
"I am deeply wounded," Ethan joked, placing a hand over his heart. "I’ll have you know I only yell at dispatchers when they route a shipment of perishable dairy products through a three-car pileup on I-96."
"Fair enough." Claire smiled softly, looking down at her hands. Then, her expression shifted into something more serious. "What brings you to a resort wedding all by yourself, Ethan? A guy like you—established, successful, apparently capable of delivering speeches under extreme psychological pressure—must have a significant other tucked away somewhere."
Ethan shook his head. "No significant other. My last relationship ended about a year ago. She wanted someone whose life had a predictable 9-to-5 trajectory. I live and breathe supply chains. When a warehouse floods at 2:00 AM in Muskegon, I don't send an assistant; I drive out there myself. That didn't fit her lifestyle."
Claire was silent for a long moment. When she looked up, her dark eyes held a depth that made Ethan’s breath catch. "She didn't know what she was walking away from."
Before Ethan could reply, the heavy glass doors behind them slid open. Julian Vance stepped out onto the deck, his expression smooth, but his eyes cold as ice.
"Claire," Julian said, his voice dropping into a tone of oily charm. "Your father is looking for you inside. He wants to discuss the upcoming charity gala logistics with you."
Claire stiffened instantly. "My father can wait ten minutes, Julian."
"Actually," Julian said, stepping closer and letting his gaze slide over to Ethan with a predatory smirk, "I think Mr. Walker has places to be. After all, he’s already missed one destination tonight. Wouldn't want him getting lost on the way back to Grand Rapids."

Ethan straightened up, his easygoing demeanor vanishing in a heartbeat. He stepped forward, closing the distance between himself and the lawyer.
