Chapter 1 - The Other Pavilion

The Michigan summer night air hit Ethan like a cool splash of reality as Claire led him past the manicured boxwood hedges toward the glowing lakeside pavilion. The distant hum of bass and laughter from Emily and Jason’s reception faded, replaced by the gentle lap of Lake Michigan against the wooden docks and the muffled strains of a string quartet playing a classical arrangement of an Ed Sheeran song.
Ethan stopped by the French doors of the second tent, smoothing down his charcoal suit jacket. His heart was still hammering against his ribs. For a man who controlled a fleet of fifty semi-trucks and managed complex supply chains across three states, the sheer humiliation of hijacking the wrong wedding was a catastrophic routing error of epic proportions.
"Breathe, logistics king," Claire whispered, her voice teasing yet strangely grounding. She reached out, her fingers brushing his lapel as she straightened a stray silk pocket square he hadn’t noticed was crooked.
The touch sent a sudden, unexpected jolt through Ethan’s system. He looked down at her. In the amber glow of the fairy lights strung across the pavilion entrance, Claire Bennett’s dark eyes looked less like amusement and more like a quiet challenge. Her deep blue maid-of-honor dress caught the breeze, framing a posture that radiated both effortless elegance and sharp intelligence.
"I’m breathing," Ethan murmured, though his lungs felt entirely occupied by the scent of jasmine and rain lingering on her skin. "Just preparing myself to face Daniel. If he sees me, I’ll never hear the end of it."
"Oh, you’re definitely going to hear the end of it," Claire said with a wicked little smile. "Best friends don't let best friends ruin someone else's matrimonial vows without turning it into an annual anniversary joke."
Before Ethan could reply, the heavy white tent flap swung open, and a frantic voice cut through the ambient chatter.
"Ethan! Where the hell have you been? The toasts started ten minutes ago!"
It was Daniel Harrington, flushed, sweating through his custom tuxedo, and looking like a man on the verge of a cardiac arrest. His new bride, Rebecca—the *real* Rebecca—stood just behind him, holding up the hem of her lace gown with a look of exhausted relief.
"Daniel," Ethan said, raising both hands in a gesture of total surrender. "Before you say anything, I need you to understand that Emily and Jason are deeply in love."
Daniel stared at him, blinking rapidly. "What?"
Claire burst into a muffled snort behind Ethan’s shoulder, turning it into a cough just as Daniel’s gaze snapped toward her.
"Claire?" Daniel frowned, recognizing her from the mutual friend circle. "What are you two doing coming from the Harrison wedding?"
"Long story involving a tragic lack of alphabetization in resort signage," Claire said smoothly, stepping past Ethan to clap Daniel on the shoulder. "Congratulations, you two. The catering smells phenomenal. Ethan, I’ll let you survive your interrogation."
She turned to leave, her dark hair swaying against her spine.
"Wait," Ethan said, taking a half-step forward. "Claire—"
"I’m at table four, logistics man," she called back over her shoulder, not breaking her stride. "Try not to lose me in transit."
May you like
Ethan watched her disappear into the crowd of elegant guests, a strange, heavy warmth settling in his chest. *Table four.* For the first time all evening, he felt like he was finally heading to the right destination.
