Chapter 3 - Uninvited Complications

The man standing beside Claire was Julian Vance—a name Ethan recognized instantly. Vance was the senior partner at Vance & Sterling Corporate Law, a high-powered firm in downtown Grand Rapids that handled major municipal contracts. He was also, as local society columns frequently reminded anyone who cared, Claire Bennett’s long-standing, heavily publicized dating companion.
Claire didn’t look thrilled. In fact, her shoulders stiffened subtly beneath the deep blue silk of her dress.
"Julian," Claire said, her tone polite but chillingly flat. "I thought you were taking client calls in the lobby. You said you had international filings."
"The filings can wait," Julian said, his eyes flicking over to Ethan with a look of practiced condescension. He didn't offer a hand. Instead, he assessed Ethan’s slightly rumpled suit—a casualty of running through two receptions and an emotional speech. "And it looks like I made it just in time before you got roped into more... wandering guests."
Ethan’s jaw tightened. He didn't like Julian’s tone, nor the casual way the man seemed to claim ownership of Claire’s evening.
"Ethan Walker," Ethan said, extending his hand with a polite, razor-sharp smile that he usually reserved for hostile corporate takeovers. "Walker Freight Solutions. And technically, I wasn't roped in; I was rescued."
Julian ignored the offered hand, instead checking his gold Rolex. "Ah. The trucking guy who crashed the Harrison wedding. It’s been all over the local group chats. Fascinating PR strategy, Mr. Walker. Though perhaps unorthodox for a black-tie resort event."
The table went dead silent. The other guests at Table Four suddenly found their dessert plates intensely interesting.
Claire’s eyes flashed with a sudden, dangerous fire. She stood up smoothly, bypassing Julian’s outstretched arm entirely. "At least Mr. Walker’s mistakes are entertaining, Julian. Some people’s mistakes are just boring and predictable."
Julian’s smile faltered, a tight micro-expression of annoyance crossing his sharp features. "Claire, darling, let's not make a scene in front of the logistics man."
"I'm stepping outside for some air," Claire said, her voice icy. She looked directly at Ethan. "Are you coming, Ethan? Or do you need someone to navigate you back to the parking lot?"
Ethan didn't hesitate. "Lead the way, Claire. I'm exceptionally good at following your lead."

As they walked away from the table and out toward the moonlit wooden deck overlooking Lake Michigan, Julian remained behind, watching them with a dark, calculating expression that promised trouble before the night was over.
