Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledgers

The boardroom emptied in a hush that felt heavier than an explosion. The lingering smell of Julian’s expensive sandalwood cologne was quickly overtaken by the sterile chill of the air conditioning. My hands trembled, not from weakness, but from the adrenaline that had sustained me through the confrontation.
Marcus Kane, my father’s former general counsel and the only man on the board who hadn't bowed to Julian’s vanity, remained standing near the panoramic glass. He set down a heavy leather binder on the mahogany table.
"Evelyn," Marcus said softly, his lined face drawn with worry. "You look like you're about to collapse. When was the last time you slept? When did the doctors discharge you?"
"Three days ago," I replied, pressing a palm against my lower abdomen where the surgical incision pulled like wire. "And I don't have the luxury of collapsing. Julian wasn't bluffing when he was dragged out. What are the secondary debt covenants he was screaming about?"
Marcus sighed, opening the binder. The pages inside were dense with foreign entity names, Cayman registrations, and subordinated loan agreements.
"While you were bedridden in high-risk pregnancy care over the last four months, Julian restructured Vale Meridian's capital stack," Marcus explained, turning a page highlighted in red. "He took out a hundred and twenty million dollars in mezzanine financing from a predatory private credit syndicate called Apex Crest. The collateral isn't his personal shares. It’s the entire intellectual property portfolio of your father's clean energy grid."
My breath caught. "My father spent twenty-five years developing that infrastructure. Julian put it up for a predatory loan?"
"Worse," Marcus said, looking directly into my eyes. "The debt carries an acceleration clause. If Julian was terminated for cause as CEO, the entire principal balance becomes immediately callable within seven business days. Apex Crest doesn't want the interest, Evelyn. They want the foreclosure. They want to strip Vale Meridian of every patent Arthur Vale ever created, carve up the corpse, and sell it to foreign state-backed conglomerates."
I stared at the black ink of my maiden name, fresh on the chairman's ledger. Julian hadn't just been cheating on me with Chloe Marr while our son died in my womb; he had spent months systematically orchestrating a demolition that would leave me with nothing but ashes and liability.
"Who controls Apex Crest?" I asked, my voice dropping to a low, lethal calm.
"A man named Roman Vance," Marcus answered grimly. "A corporate raider who makes his fortune feeding on distressed estates. And according to security logs, Roman Vance had dinner with Julian six days ago in Aspen—while you were being rushed to the ICU."
A surge of cold, unyielding fury replaced the dull ache in my chest.

"Call our forensic accountants," I ordered, picking up my father’s pen. "Tell them they have forty-eight hours to trace where that hundred and twenty million actually went. Julian didn't put that money into operations. He hid it. And I am going to tear down every wall he built to find it."
