Chapter 12 - The Whispers in the Shadows

By seven o'clock that evening, the national financial networks were ablaze with breaking news.
*BREAKING: Apex Crest Founder Indicted in Massive Corporate Fraud Scheme.*
*Vale Meridian Shares Rebound 34% After Chairman Evelyn Vale Thwarts Hostile Takeover.*
*Disgraced Ex-CEO Julian Sterling Denied Bail in Federal Fraud Trial.*
The executive floor was buzzing with champagne corks popping, loyal staff cheering, and Marcus fielding calls from international energy partners eager to double their investments in our clean grid infrastructure. Vale Meridian was not only saved; it was financially stronger than it had ever been.
I slipped away from the celebrations into my private office, turning off the overhead lights to look out at the city below. The night air was clean, the rain having washed away the smog and grime of the past week.
I picked up my framed photograph of Daniel’s ultrasound—the only physical image I had left of my baby boy.
"We did it, Daniel," I whispered, pressing my lips to the cool glass of the frame. "Your father can never hurt us again. Your grandfather's name is safe."
A soft knock came at my office door.
"Evelyn?" Marcus stepped in, holding a plain, unmarked Manila envelope sealed with red wax. He looked troubled, his earlier joy completely vanished.
"What is it, Marcus?" I asked, setting the photo down gently. "Not another creditor?"
"No," Marcus said, his voice unusually low and hesitant. "A private courier dropped this off downstairs five minutes ago. He said it was hand-delivered from the chief medical examiner's office at San Francisco General."
My heart lurched in my chest. "San Francisco General? That's where I was brought the night Daniel died."
"It’s an addendum to your emergency toxicology report from that night," Marcus whispered, his hand shaking as he extended the envelope toward me. "The lab results that Julian’s personal physician marked as 'routine and sealed' without our knowledge."
With trembling fingers, I broke the red wax seal and pulled out the medical report inside.
My eyes scanned down the clinical rows of black text until they landed on the bolded laboratory findings:
*Sample ID: Evelyn Vale — Gestational Week 31.*
*Finding: High concentration of Methotrexate and synthetic prostaglandin analogues detected in placental tissue.*
*Conclusion: Placental abruption was NOT spontaneous. Labor and catastrophic internal hemorrhaging were chemically induced.*
The room began to spin. The air in my lungs turned to ice.
My son had not died of natural complications.
Daniel had been murdered.

And as my eyes reached the bottom of the page, where the courier had scrawled a short, handwritten note in elegant cursive, my entire world shattered into darkness once again:
*Julian was only the weapon, Evelyn. Did you really think he had the brains to plan this alone? Check your father’s will again.*
