Chapter 11 - The Apex Confrontation

At 4:45 PM, fifteen minutes before the default deadline, Roman Vance arrived with his legal entourage. He walked into the Vale Meridian boardroom with the supreme, unchecked confidence of an apex predator arriving to collect its kill.

"Four o'clock and forty-five minutes, Ms. Vale," Roman said smoothly, setting an ornate platinum pen on the mahogany table alongside the patent forfeiture agreement. "I assume you have the keys ready. There is no shame in surrender. You simply weren't built for this world."

"You seem very sure of yourself, Mr. Vance," I replied, sitting calmly with Marcus by my side, our hands resting on a closed black folder.

"I know the numbers," Roman scoffed. "You don't have the cash, your lines of credit are frozen, and the market has discounted your survival to zero. Sign the transfer, and Apex Crest will graciously assume your operating liabilities, sparing you personal bankruptcy."

"Before I sign," I said, "I have a small wire confirmation receipt I would like you to review."

Marcus slid a single sheet of paper across the polished wood.

Roman glanced down casually, his smug smile faltering as his eyes locked onto the numbers.

"FedWire Confirmation No. 884920," I read aloud. "Amount: One hundred and twenty-eight million, four hundred and ten thousand dollars. Sent directly to Apex Crest's designated depository account at JPMorgan Chase. Principal fully satisfied. Default penalty interest satisfied in full."

Roman’s face turned an ugly, mottled red. "Where... where did you get this liquidity?"

"From Julian's private escrow in Zurich," I said, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the table. "The money you gave him as a secret kickback to deliberately engineer this default."

Roman stood up abruptly, knocking his leather chair backward. "This is an illegal interception of private assets! My firm will tie you up in injunctions for the next decade!"

"I don't think you will, Roman," a new voice echoed from the doorway.

The boardroom doors opened wide. Entering the room was Special Agent Sarah Lin from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by four armed agents and two senior attorneys from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"Roman Vance," Agent Lin said, displaying her badge. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, market manipulation, and illegal corporate espionage in connection with the Apex Crest debt covenants."

Roman stood frozen, the color draining completely from his features as the agents moved forward, clicking open a pair of steel handcuffs.

"You can't do this!" Roman snarled, glancing wildly between the agents and me. "I have sovereign immunity agreements through my offshore holding funds!"

"Those funds were pierced three hours ago by the Southern District of New York," Agent Lin replied coldly. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

As the cuffs snapped around his wrists, Roman glared at me with pure, venomous rage.

"You think you’ve saved this company, Evelyn?" Roman hissed as they dragged him toward the door. "Julian wasn't acting alone! You think he found those Cayman conduits by himself? You think he knew how to hide eighty million dollars? Someone gave him the playbook. Someone inside your own family circle!"

The doors clicked shut behind him, leaving the boardroom in profound, ringing silence.
