Chapter 6 - Blood on the Ivory Gown

The stairwell exploded with tactical operators in black ballistic gear, their assault rifles lowered as they took in the scene. Within seconds, two federal agents had Fiona Vale pinned against the concrete, applying a tourniquet to her shattered shoulder while she spat curses into the dust. Another agent had Matthias in handcuffs, reading him his constitutional rights while my husband stared at me with an expression of shattered, pathetic grief.
"Elena! Please, let me help her!" Matthias yelled, struggling against the agent's grip as they pulled him toward the stairs. "She's my wife! That's my daughter!"
"You forfeited that right when you brought twenty-eight thousand dollars of blood money into our home, Matthias," I said, leaning heavily against Julian Ellison as another wave of searing pain gripped my abdomen.
"EMT team, move up!" Julian barked toward the stairs. "We have a thirty-two-week pregnant female in active labor! Clear the corridor!"
Two paramedics in high-visibility parkas scrambled down the concrete steps carrying a folding stretcher and an emergency obstetrics kit. One of them, a veteran paramedic named Sarah whom I had worked with on dozens of ambulance handoffs at Greenwich General, knelt beside me, her eyes widening behind her safety glasses.
"Elena? Jesus, Elena, what are you doing down here?"
"Long story, Sarah," I gritted out through clenched teeth, squeezing Julian’s hand with enough force to crack bone. "Contractions are ninety seconds apart. Duration forty-five seconds. Water broke two minutes ago. Clear fluid, no meconium, but she’s eight weeks early."
"Alright, trauma queen, let's get you off this cold concrete," Sarah said, her voice shifting into that calm, rhythmic tone that all seasoned emergency responders use to hold back panic. "Gurney is ready. We’re moving her to the dining room—the driveway is blocked by snowdrifts, but the heavy rescue plow is cutting through the lower gate right now."
They lifted me onto the gurney. As they wheeled me past Fiona Vale, the woman glared at me through tangled, sweat-soaked hair, her teeth stained with blood.
"You won't keep anything, Elena," Fiona whispered, venom dripping from every syllable. "The Dre name is garbage after tonight. Arthur is going to prison. Matthias is going to prison. You’ll be raising a felon's daughter on a nurse’s pension."
I raised my head from the gurney, looking straight into the eyes of the woman who had tried to incinerate an entire room of human beings to save her own skin.
"My daughter will never carry that name," I said, each word deliberate, icy, and pure. "And she will know that her mother took down the entire house of cards with her bare hands."
We reached the top of the stairs, emerging into the grand dining room.
The scene above was completely altered. Federal marshals had lined the sixty party guests along the perimeter of the room, collecting identification and cell phones. Arthur Dre was sitting in the corner, his silver head in his hands, flanked by two armed federal officers who were already sealing cardboard evidence boxes containing his personal files from the study. Eleanor Dre sat across from him, weeping silently into an antique linen napkin, the illusion of their untouchable dynasty shattered forever.
"Clear the center table!" Sarah shouted to the officers. "Get clean linens from the pantry and all the sterile towels you can find! We’re not making it to the hospital before this baby delivers!"

The wind outside rattled the heavy leaded windows, but inside, under the glare of tactical work lights, my world narrowed down to a single, primal reality: the rhythmic, unstoppable force of new life fighting its way into the world amidst the wreckage of a fallen kingdom.
