Chapter 24 - The Key to Vault 14

Silence descended over the salon, thick and suffocating. Outside, the wind howled against the reinforced glass, rattling the frosted panes.
Julian stepped forward, his expression grave. "Mrs. Dre—or Madame Claire—if you truly believed Elena was dead, what is the legacy mentioned in your letter? What did Victoria steal that required us to come to Switzerland?"
Eleanor wiped her cheeks with a linen handkerchief, drawing in a long, steadying breath. When she looked up, the fragility was gone, replaced by the steely resolve of a woman who had survived four decades in exile.
"House Dre was never an empire of legitimate shipping and real estate," Eleanor said coldly. "Matthias’s grandfather made his wealth laundering wartime capital through private Zurich institutions. When Arthur Dre married me, he signed a prenuptial covenant: the family fortune could only be passed to a child born of Claire blood who reached the age of thirty without a criminal conviction."
I stared at her. "Victoria knew that."
"Victoria knew that every penny Matthias controlled was technically held in escrow by the Claire Trust," Eleanor replied. "To unlock the capital, she needed me dead, and she needed a child born under her legal guardianship. She raised you to be submissive, Elena. She married you to Matthias to bind the bloodline. But when Maya was conceived, Victoria realized she no longer needed either of you."
Eleanor reached into the pocket of her sweater and withdrew an antique, heavy brass key intertwined with a silver cylinder marked with five rotating cipher rings.
"This is the physical key to Vault 14 beneath the Old Town of Geneva," Eleanor said, holding it out toward me. "Inside is not just the original deed to seventy percent of the Dre global holdings, but the private ledgers. The names of every judge, every senator, and every offshore syndicate that Victoria and Matthias bought to protect their empire."
Julian took a sharp breath. "Those ledgers would dismantle the remaining network in New York overnight. It would eliminate every threat to Maya permanently."
Before I could reach for the key, a sharp *thud* echoed through the heavy timber of the chateau's front doors.
Down in the foyer, Henri shouted in rapid French.

Then, the sickening crack of a high-caliber gunshot shattered the quiet of the mountain fortress.
