Chapter 14 - The Newport Arrival

Rosecliff Mansion stood perched on the edge of the Atlantic cliffside like an alabaster fortress, its gilded French windows blazing with thousands of candles. Valets in scarlet liveries parked a never-ending caravan of Bentleys, Rolls-Royces, and Maybachs along the circular driveway.

I stepped out of Julian’s black sedan wearing an architectural floor-length gown of deep, midnight sapphire—a color of midnight storms, as far removed from the innocent ivory lace of my Christmas gala dress as night from day. My dark hair was swept up into an elegant chignon secured by diamond pins, my posture immaculate.

Beside me, Julian looked devastatingly aristocratic in a tailored black tuxedo, his jaw square, his eyes scanning the terrace with tactical precision.

Maya was safe twenty miles away in an undisclosed, fortified safe house under Boyd’s personal watch. Leaving her even for four hours had torn at my soul, but I knew that tonight, the battlefield was here.

"Remember," Julian murmured, offering his arm as we ascended the grand marble staircase, "Alistair hasn't set foot on American soil in four decades. He wants legitimacy. He wants the elite to accept him as the elder statesman of the Dre dynasty. If you provoke him publicly, he cannot retaliate without revealing his hand to the federal agents monitoring the perimeter."

"I don't intend to provoke him, Julian," I said, slipping my gloved hand into the crook of his arm. "I intend to dismantle him."

As we crossed the threshold into the grand ballroom, the string quartet ceased for a split second. Whispers rippled through the gathering of Rhode Island and New York high society like a wildfire through dry brush.

*Is that her?*

*Matthias’s wife... the one who survived the Greenwich raid...*

*Good God, what is she doing here?*

Standing beneath the central crystal chandelier, surrounded by bankers, senators, and socialites, was a tall, silver-haired man in his late sixties. He possessed the same aristocratic, hawk-like profile as Victoria, but his eyes were a piercing, glacial blue—colder and vastly more cunning than Matthias had ever been.

Alistair Dre.

He spotted us immediately. A slow, predatory smile touched the corners of his thin lips. Excusing himself from a cluster of state representatives, he walked across the parquet floor toward us, his cane tipped with a silver falcon clicking rhythmically against the wood.

"Elena," he said, his voice carrying the deep, melodic resonance of old money and utter ruthlessness. "At last, the prodigal daughter-in-law graces us with her presence. You look magnificent for a woman who has endured so much... unfortunate tragedy."

"Mr. Dre," I replied, my voice cool, clear, and perfectly modulated so that at least two dozen surrounding socialites could hear every word. "I would say it’s a pleasure to meet you, but we both know that House Dre has never brought anything to this state except ruin and federal penitentiaries."

A collective gasp swept through the nearby onlookers.

Alistair’s smile didn't waver, but his glacial blue eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "Careful, my dear. The history of our family is long, and those who seek to tear down its pillars often find the roof collapsing upon their own heads. Especially those with precious little bundles at home who require... long-term stability."

Julian took a half-step forward, his voice a low, lethal hum that vibrated in the tense air. "Make one more veiled threat against that child, Alistair, and the federal marshals stationed at the gate won't even wait for a warrant to take you into custody."

May you like

Alistair chuckled softly, leaning heavily on his cane. "You think you hold the cards, counselor? You think Matthias’s signed surrender protects you? Go check your phone, Julian. A true master never strikes where his enemy is looking."
