Chapter 25 - Flight through the Alpine Fog

"Down!" Julian roared, lunging forward and tackling both me and Eleanor behind the thick masonry of the fireplace mantle just as the panoramic glass exploded inward in a blizzard of diamond shards.

Maya screamed in terror, her small cries muffled against my chest as I curled my body entirely over her. The freezing Alpine air rushed into the room, carrying the stench of cordite and burning propellant.

"Henri!" Eleanor cried out, but Julian was already on his feet, his jaw set, pulling a concealed Glock from his inner coat holster.

"They tracked us from the airport," Julian said, his eyes scanning the shattered terrace. "The silver SUV on the mountain road."

"There is an egress tunnel behind the wine cellar," Eleanor said, her voice remarkably calm despite the gunfire echoing from the grand staircase. "It leads down the cliff to the funicular track. But the bank opens in three hours. If they know we are here, they will have men watching Vault 14."

"Boyd's team is still thirty miles away in Lausanne," Julian said, firing two precise suppression rounds through the arched doorway as a masked man in tactical gear attempted to breach the salon. The man collapsed with a grunt, his weapon clattering across the hardwood. "We can't wait for cavalry. We move now."

Julian grabbed my arm, pulling me up. "Stay low, Elena. Keep your eyes on my back."

We sprinted through the smoke-filled corridors, down the winding stone steps into the cavernous cellars beneath the chateau. Behind us, the sounds of breaching charges reverberated through the foundation. Whoever these men were, they weren't petty thugs; they were private military contractors, moving with ruthless, synchronized precision.

At the rear of the cellar, Eleanor pulled an ancient iron lever hidden behind a rack of vintage Burgundy. A slab of rough-hewn stone swung inward, revealing a damp, narrow tunnel lit by emergency battery lamps.

"Go," Eleanor urged, her face pale in the dim light. "The funicular will take you down to the lakeside road in Territet. Henri has an armored sedan parked in the municipal boat garage."

"You're coming with us," I said, grabbing her coat sleeve. "I didn't find you after thirty-two years just to watch you die in another fire!"

Eleanor looked at me, her stormy hazel eyes shining with fierce pride. "I am not dying today, my darling. But someone has to seal the blast door behind you, or they will follow your footprints in the snow down the mountain."

"No!" I cried.

"Elena, look at your daughter," Eleanor commanded, her voice ringing with the absolute authority of a matriarch. "Your place is with Maya. Finish what I started. Break their empire once and for all."

Before I could fight her, Julian gripped the iron lever from the inside. "Madame Claire, there is another override on this side. We seal it together."

With a sudden burst of strength, Julian dragged Eleanor across the threshold and slammed the heavy iron door shut, throwing the mechanical bolt just as a volley of rounds pinged violently against the outside steel.

In the sudden, echoing dark of the subterranean tunnel, Maya’s quiet sobs subsided as Eleanor reached out, her trembling, scarred hands gently cupping my face.

"You really are your mother's daughter," she whispered.
