Chapter 29 - The Flight to the East

The private Boeing 777 soared at thirty-five thousand feet through the starless velvet night, cutting a straight line across the Eurasian continent toward the neon-drenched shores of Macau. Inside the ultra-luxurious master cabin, the atmosphere was a masterclass in calculated preparation.

The sprawling mahogany desk was no longer covered in European shipping manifests and mafia dossiers; instead, it was piled high with detailed intelligence reports on the Triad syndicates of the Pacific, historical records of ancient Asian culinary guilds, and encrypted dossiers on the legendary "Master of the Red Dragon"—Chef Chen Wei, a culinary titan who had ruled the underground food markets of East Asia for over four decades without ever losing a single challenge.

Vincent sat at the desk, studying a thermal satellite map of the Macau floating floating restaurant where the showdown was scheduled to take place. His jaw was set in a hard, unyielding line, a heavy automatic pistol resting disassembled on a cleaning mat beside his laptop.

Across from him sat Dante, furiously communicating with deep-cover Moretti operatives stationed throughout Hong Kong and Shenzhen. “We’ve got backup positioned across the Pearl River Delta, Boss,” Dante reported without looking up from his screen. “If the Triads try any dirty tricks outside the arena, our men will shut down every port from Guangzhou to Zhuhai before they can even draw a weapon.”

Lena stood by the massive, curved window of the cabin, staring out at the faint, distant glow of the Asian coastline breaking through the horizon. Her mind wasn't on the guns, the triads, or the danger waiting for her in Macau. Her mind was entirely focused on flavor.

She closed her eyes, remembering her grandmother’s old teachings about the Five Elements of taste—sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty—and how they reflected not just food, but the balance of human nature. The Master of the Red Dragon wasn't just a chef; he was an institution. To beat him, she wouldn't need violence. She would need a dish so profound, so mathematically and emotionally devastating, that it would force an empire to its knees.

Strong, familiar arms slid around her waist, pulling her back against a solid, warm chest. Vincent rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the faint, comforting scent of rosemary and sea salt that always followed her.

“You’re quiet tonight, *mia bella*,” Vincent whispered softly against her ear. “Are you worried about Chen Wei?”

“I’m not worried about him, Vincent,” Lena murmured, leaning back into his embrace, letting his steady strength ground her. “I’m thinking about what dish I’m going to serve. Chen Wei is known for his mastery of fire and spice—the heavy, numbing heat of Sichuan peppercorns and fermented bean paste. He thinks European cuisine is bland, heavy on butter and light on soul.”

“Then show him your soul,” Vincent replied, his voice rich with absolute, unshakeable faith in his wife. “Show him the kitchen that conquered New York and brought the lords of Monaco to their knees.”

Lena turned within his arms, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. A fierce, brilliant smile touched her lips. “Oh, I will, Vincent. I’m going to serve him a dish he’ll never forget. A dish that tells him exactly who rules the Global Table.”

Before Vincent could answer, the captain’s voice crackled over the intercom speaker: *“Don Moretti, Chef Calder, we are commencing our final descent into Macau International Airport. Prepare for landing.”*

Vincent looked down at Lena, his smile matching hers with equal, lethal brilliance.
