Chapter 27 - The Banquet of Redemption

Three days had passed since the seismic shift of power at the Palais de la Mer. The Mediterranean underworld had been completely restructured. The corrupt syndicates had been purged, the trade routes secured under the direct oversight of the Royal Culinary Guild, and the fear of the Plus-Size Chef had become legendary from the ports of Marseille to the docks of Istanbul.
To celebrate the dawn of this new era, Lena had demanded one thing before returning to New York: a grand, public banquet held on the sprawling limestone terraces of the palace overlooking the azure sea. But this wasn't a gathering of mafia bosses, corrupt politicians, or dangerous criminals. It was a feast for the people who actually kept the world running—the local fishermen, market vendors, dockworkers, pastry bakers, and kitchen staff of Monaco.
The air was thick with the rich, intoxicating aromas of slow-roasted lamb, rosemary-infused olive oil, fresh-baked crusty sourdough bread, and delicate citrus reductions. Long wooden tables stretched across the terrace, laden down with mountains of vibrant food, shimmering seafood, and cascading platters of colorful fruits and vegetables.
At the center of it all stood Lena. Gone was the emerald-green velvet gown of the High Table; in its place, she wore a pristine, brilliantly white chef’s jacket over a comfortable black apron, her silver hair tied back neatly in a practical knot. Her sleeves were rolled up, flour dusted lightly across her cheek, her hands moving with lightning speed as she plated dish after dish with absolute artistic precision.
A few yards away, leaning against a stone balustrade with a glass of rich red Barolo wine in his hand, stood Vincent Moretti. He had discarded his formal tuxedo jacket, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the top buttons open, his dark hair catching the warm Mediterranean sun. He watched his wife with an expression of profound, unshakable peace. The monster of the East Coast mafia had found his anchor in the warmth of a kitchen.
Dante walked up beside him, handing over a secure tablet. “All intelligence reports are clean, Boss. The European branches are falling in line, and the shipping lanes are operating at record efficiency. We’re officially untouchable.”
Vincent took a slow sip of his wine, his eyes never leaving Lena, who was currently laughing as she handed a steaming bowl of seafood stew to an elderly local fisherman.
“We were always untouchable, Dante,” Vincent murmured quietly. “We just finally learned how to feed our souls.”
Suddenly, Lena looked up from the plating station, catching Vincent’s gaze across the crowded terrace. Even amidst the noise of the bustling banquet, the clinking of glasses, and the laughter of the guests, the rest of the world seemed to melt away between them.
Lena wiped her hands on her apron, a radiant, breathtaking smile breaking across her face. She picked up two small porcelain plates carrying a delicate dark chocolate tart infused with sea salt and fresh berries—her signature creation—and walked across the terrace directly toward her husband.
“You’ve been standing over there brooding for twenty minutes, Don Moretti,” Lena teased softly as she stopped right in front of him, holding out one of the plates. “Are you supervising the party, or are you just waiting for a taste?”
Vincent set his wine glass down on the stone balustrade, stepping in close, wrapping his strong arms securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest despite the crowd around them. He didn't care who was watching anymore.
“I’ve already tasted the best thing this world has to offer, *mia bella*,” Vincent whispered huskily, looking down into her sparkling eyes.

Lena blushed, leaning up to press a soft, lingering kiss against his lips, tasting of sweet chocolate, rich berries, and a lifetime of shared victories.
