Chapter 22 - Crossing the Atlantic

The private Gulfstream jet cut through the starless expanse of the night sky, cruising high above the turbulent black waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the luxury surrounding them. There were no champagne glasses clinking or soft jazz playing. Instead, the mahogany table in the center of the cabin was covered not with food, but with digital tactical displays, shipping manifests, and encrypted dossier packets detailing the most dangerous figures in European organized crime.
Vincent sat at the head of the table, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dense corded muscle and faint scars of a life carved out of violence. Opposite him sat Dante, furiously tapping away on a secure military-grade laptop, routing satellite feeds from the Mediterranean ports.
Lena stood by the reinforced window, staring out at the endless abyss of clouds illuminated by the silver wash of the moon. Her mind was a whirlwind. For her entire life, she had defined herself by the weight of her body, the burns on her hands, the heat of the stove, and the fierce, uncompromising loyalty of her brigade. She had fought tooth and nail to earn respect in a brutal, male-dominated culinary world. Now, she was being pulled into an international shadow war where her lineage made her a queen, and her recipes were the keys to global economic power.
“You’re quiet,” a deep, resonant voice murmured behind her.
Strong, warm arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a solid, familiar chest. Vincent rested his chin gently on her shoulder, his dark eyes reflecting the cool blue light of the digital displays across the cabin.
“I’m just thinking about how ridiculous this is, Vincent,” Lena sighed, leaning back into his embrace, letting the steady beat of his heart anchor her. “A week ago, I was fighting to keep my restaurant from being swallowed by corporate rats. Now I’m flying to Monaco to claim a shipping empire because of a duck breast and a family crest.”
“Life has a funny way of seasoning our dishes, *mia bella*,” Vincent whispered, pressing a soft kiss to the side of her neck. “You spent years feeding people, nourishing them, bringing them together around a table. Power in the underworld isn't just about guns and bullets. It’s about supply lines. It’s about who controls what people consume. Your grandmother understood that. And now, so do you.”
“And what about the men waiting for us in Monaco?” Lena turned slightly within his arms, looking up into his piercing gaze. “Jean-Luc made it sound like we’re walking into a slaughterhouse disguised as a royal gala.”
Vincent’s expression hardened, the softness in his eyes vanishing, replaced by the cold, calculating glare of a mafia king who had survived a dozen assassination attempts. “Let them come,” Vincent said, his voice dropping an octave, rich with dark promise. “They think they’re dealing with a lone chef who inherited a shiny piece of metal. They don’t know that the chef is backed by the most ruthless syndicate on the East Coast. And more importantly, they don’t know that I will burn every single port, palace, and yacht in the Mediterranean before I let anyone lay a finger on you.”
Before Lena could reply, Dante cleared his throat loudly from the table, breaking the intense, heavy silence of the cabin.
“Boss, we’ve got a secure ping coming in from the French naval intelligence liaison,” Dante said, his face grim as he stared at the glowing screen. “Someone just leaked our flight plan to the Syndicate of the Crimson Fork. They’re mobilizing a strike team to intercept our descent over the French Riviera.”
Vincent didn't flinch. He didn't even raise his voice. He simply tightened his grip around Lena’s waist, a dark, bloodthirsty grin spreading across his face.

“Good,” Vincent whispered softly into the chill air of the cabin. “Save us the trouble of hunting them down.”
