Chapter 15 - Tasting the Enemy

The grand ballroom of the Bellwether Estate was a spectacle of gilded opulence. Crystal chandeliers hung from thirty-foot ceilings, illuminating long banquet tables draped in black silk and adorned with towering arrangements of dark calla lilies and silver candelabras.

Seated at the tables were eighty of the most powerful people on the eastern seaboard: federal judges, shipping tycoons, corrupt state senators, and the capos of the Five Families who held the fragile peace of the underworld in their hands.

At the head table, Viviana Vane sat beside the empty chair reserved for Vincent Calder. Her fingers tapped impatiently against her crystal water goblet. Across the room, disguised in a dark vest and white service apron, Matteo Bellini watched the double service doors with predatory impatience.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Vincent Calder walked into the room, calm, regal, and radiating absolute power. He took his seat beside Viviana without acknowledging her presence, resting his hands casually on the dark silk tablecloth.

A second later, Lena Calder led the service brigade.

A collective murmur swept through the grand dining hall. Lena looked breathtaking. She had removed her apron, wearing her pristine white executive chef’s jacket over tailored black trousers, her posture magnificent, her hazel eyes gleaming with cold confidence. Behind her, twenty servers carried silver cloches covering the first course.

Lena stopped directly behind Vincent and Viviana’s seats.

“Distinguished guests,” Lena’s clear, melodious voice filled the cavernous room, capturing every ear. “Tonight, *L’Orangerie Calder* presents a tasting menu inspired by historical reckonings. To begin: a tartare of dry-aged Wagyu beef, infused with pickled winter truffles and an emulsion of wild juniper and cold-pressed olive oil.”

The cloches were lifted in unison. The presentation was flawless—a jewel-like ring of ruby beef, adorned with delicate gold leaf and dark truffles, releasing an earthy, intoxicating aroma.

Viviana picked up her silver fork, her eyes glittering with malice as she leaned toward Vincent. “A lovely first course, Vincent. Though I wonder... did your wife check the wine pairing?”

Matteo Bellini, standing near the sommelier cart, reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy crystal decanter filled with deep, inky Barolo. He stepped toward Vincent’s glass.

“Allow me, Don Calder,” Bellini rasped, tipping the decanter.

“Stop,” Lena’s voice rang out like a gunshot.

The entire ballroom went silent. Glasses stopped clinking. The high-society guests froze, forks suspended in mid-air.

Matteo Bellini hesitated, his scarred face tightening. “Chef? It is the reserve vintage for the Don.”

Lena walked around the table, her steps slow, measured, and hypnotic. She stopped inches from Bellini, her eyes sweeping over the decanter.

“You poured that from the private reserve crate delivered this afternoon,” Lena said calmly. “Didn't you, Matteo?”

The use of his real name sent a shockwave through the room. Matteo’s jaw dropped. Several capos at the surrounding tables reached instinctively into their tuxedos.

“I—I don’t know what you mean,” Bellini stammered, stepping back.

“The decanter is crystal, but the stopper was soaked in cyanide and bitter almond extract,” Lena announced to the entire room, her voice projecting with absolute, devastating clarity. “Matteo Bellini, exiled traitor of the southern syndicates, disguised himself as a server to poison Don Calder’s glass—under the direct orders of Countess Viviana Vane.”

A deafening uproar erupted in the ballroom.

Viviana leaped to her feet, knocking her silver goblet to the floor with a resonant crash. “She’s lying! This woman is insane! Guards, remove this lunatic from my estate!”

Viviana’s private security guards drew their weapons, moving toward Lena.

They didn't make it two steps.

Vincent was on his feet in an instant. With the speed of a striking cobra, his hand came out from beneath the silk tablecloth holding a suppressed pistol. A single, muffled *thwack* echoed through the room.

The lead guard collapsed backward into a flower tower, clutching his shattered kneecap, screaming in agony.

Dante and ten Calder operatives burst through the service exits, their submachine guns raised, instantly encircling the room and disarming Viviana’s mercenaries before a single civilian could scream.

Bellini dropped the crystal decanter; it shattered on the hardwood floor, releasing the sharp, sickening smell of bitter almonds and poisoned wine that Lena had identified from ten paces away. Bellini reached for his waist, but Lena didn't wait for Vincent’s men.

With explosive speed and the sheer momentum of her unyielding frame, Lena grabbed a heavy silver serving platter from the nearest cart and swung it with devastating force straight into Bellini’s jaw.

The impact sounded like a baseball bat cracking against leather. Bellini’s head snapped sideways, his teeth spraying across the polished floor as he crashed unconscious onto the broken glass.

Lena stood over him, holding the silver platter, breathing steadily, her chef’s coat pristine, looking entirely untamed and glorious.

The room was paralyzed in terrified, reverent silence.

Vincent walked slowly to Lena’s side. He didn't look at Bellini, nor did he look at the trembling guests. He looked only at his wife, his dark eyes ablaze with an adoration so profound, so terrifyingly intense, that everyone in the room knew they were looking at the true rulers of the city.

Vincent turned his cold gaze onto Viviana, who was frozen against her chair, her face ash-white.

“The meal is concluded, Viviana,” Vincent whispered, his voice echoing in the silence. “And your empire is served.”
