Chapter 9 - The Lion's Den

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was a glittering sea of champagne flutes, velvet tuxedos, and black-market royalty.

It was the annual Winter Solstice Gala—neutral ground where the Five Families met to negotiate territories and toast to their collective wealth. Tonight, however, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Rumors had spread like wildfire: Alessandro Vitale was dead, murdered in his Adirondack retreat, and his rogue bride had been captured by Enzo Russo.

Enzo Russo stood near the VIP stage, a glass of bourbon in his hand, a smug, triumphant grin plastered across his face. Beside him, sweating through his three-thousand-dollar tuxedo, stood Richard Moretti.

"Are you sure he's dead, Enzo?" Richard whispered nervously, dabbing his damp forehead with a silk handkerchief. "If Vitale is alive, he’ll skin us both alive."

"Relax, Richard," Enzo sneered, waving a dismissive hand. "My men put a sniper round through his spine. The Vitale syndicate is crumbling. And tonight, when you publicly hand over your daughter's marriage rights to my family, I take his shipping routes, and you get your debt forgiven. You should be thanking me."

The double doors of the ballroom swung open with a resounding thud.

The room instantly fell dead silent. The string quartet stopped mid-measure. Two hundred hardened criminals turned their heads toward the entrance.

Walking down the grand marble staircase, completely unescorted, was Isabella Moretti.

She wore a backless, blood-red silk gown that hugged every curve of her body like a second skin. Her short, raven hair was styled with razor-sharp elegance, her dark eyes flashing with lethal confidence. She didn't look like a terrified hostage. She walked into the lion's den like the apex predator who owned the room.

Richard’s jaw dropped. "Isabella?"

Enzo’s eyes widened with greedy triumph. He stepped forward, signaling his armed guards to surround the base of the stairs. "Well, well. The runaway bride returns to surrender."

Isabella stopped at the center of the ballroom floor, standing beneath a massive crystal chandelier. She looked at her father, her eyes colder than the November ice she had escaped through weeks ago.

"Surrender?" Isabella’s clear, melodic voice carried to every corner of the silent hall. "I didn't come here to surrender, Enzo. I came to collect a debt."

Richard stepped toward her, his face twisting into a false, desperate smile. "Isabella, sweetheart! Thank God you're safe! Come here, listen to your father—"

"Do not speak to me," Isabella snapped, her voice cutting through him like a blade. "You sold my life for three million dollars. You gave Enzo the keys to my bedroom so he could slaughter me on my wedding night. You aren't my father. You are a dead man walking."

Enzo laughed, a loud, barking sound that echoed off the high ceilings. "Brave words for a little girl with no one left to protect her. Alessandro Vitale is rotting in a mountain morgue, sweetheart. You belong to me now."

"Does he?"

A voice echoed from the shadows of the upper mezzanine—a deep, resonant baritone that sent an icy shockwave through every spine in the room.

The heavy double doors of the balcony were kicked open.

Alessandro Vitale stepped into the light.

He was dressed in an immaculate, triple-black tailored tuxedo, his broad shoulders squared, moving without a trace of the bullet that had nearly ended his life. Flanking him were fifty heavily armed Vitale soldiers, their automatic weapons trained directly on the crowd below.

Panic exploded. Glasses shattered. Guests screamed, diving behind tables as the realization hit: the King of the Eastern Seaboard was not dead. He had come to claim his throne.

"Enzo Russo," Alessandro said calmly, descending the mezzanine stairs, his eyes locked onto the rival don. "You broke the sacred laws of the Commission. You conspired with a traitor, attempted to assassinate a Don, and laid your filthy hands on my wife."

Enzo panicked, drawing a pistol from his jacket and reaching frantically to grab Isabella as a human shield. "Grab her!" he screamed at Richard. "Grab the girl!"

Richard lunged forward, his hands reaching for his daughter's throat.

Isabella didn't scream. She didn't flinch.

Remembering every hour in the subterranean range, she reached beneath the slit of her red silk gown, pulled a micro-compact Glock from a garter holster, and smoothly brought the weapon up.

*Crack.*

The bullet struck Richard Moretti squarely through his right kneecap.

Her father shrieked in agony, collapsing to the polished marble floor, clutching his shattered leg and sobbing like a child.

"I told you," Isabella whispered coldly, looking down at the man who had sold her, "never to touch me again."

Before Enzo could raise his weapon, Alessandro closed the distance. Moving with blinding speed, he grabbed Enzo’s wrist, twisting it until the bone snapped with a sickening crunch. The gun clattered to the floor. Alessandro slammed Enzo against the marble pillar, his hand wrapping around the rival boss’s throat like an iron vice.

"No one," Alessandro growled, leaning close so only Enzo could hear his final words, "threatens my bride."

With a single, brutal twist of his hands, Alessandro snapped Enzo Russo’s neck.

The room went deathly still. The rival capos dropped their weapons, falling to their knees in absolute surrender. The war was over.

Alessandro let the lifeless body slump to the floor. He didn't look at the crowd. He didn't look at Richard Moretti groveling in his own blood.

He turned, his gray eyes softening completely, and walked toward the woman in the red dress.
