Chapter 7 - The Ambush at the Black Manor

The Black Manor was not a prison; it was a fortress carved into the granite face of a secluded mountain peak, surrounded by hundred-foot pines and guarded by miles of private, sensor-laced wilderness.
For three weeks, winter claimed the world outside. Snow piled high against the stone ramparts, locking them in an isolated cocoon of wood-burning hearths, ancient libraries, and heavy, suffocating tension.
Isabella didn't spend those weeks cowering.
To Alessandro’s astonishment, she demanded to be trained. She refused to be the prize traded between violent men; she refused to ever run barefoot into an ice storm again.
Down in the subterranean firing range beneath the manor, Alessandro stood behind her, his large body pressed close to hers, his hands guiding her trembling wrists as she aimed a 9mm pistol at a target forty yards downrange.
"Breathe out, Isabella," his voice was a warm rumble against the shell of her ear. "Don't fight the recoil. Anticipate it. Marry the weapon. It only speaks when you give it permission."
Her breath hitched, not from the weight of the gun, but from the searing proximity of his chest against her back. She could feel every hardened contour of his muscles, could smell the dark cedar of his skin. Every time he adjusted her stance, his hands lingering on her hips or straightening her shoulders, a liquid heat coiled deep in her stomach.
She pulled the trigger. *Crack.*
The bullet struck the target dead center in the chest.
She turned in his arms, her lips inches from his jaw, her eyes burning with a defiance that made his pupils dilate. "Like that?"
Alessandro looked down at her lips, his pulse visibly jumping in the hollow of his throat. "Exactly like that," he whispered.
For a heartbeat, the air between them turned to pure kerosene. His hand rose, his thumb brushing against her lower lip, his gray eyes darkening with an ancient, unspoken hunger. Isabella didn't pull away. Her breath mingled with his, her body leaning into his warmth, the lines between captor, protector, and lover blurring into oblivion.
Then, the manor’s red emergency lights flared to life.
A high-pitched siren pierced the stillness, shattering the spell.
The console on the wall beeped frantically: *PERIMETER BREACH. SECTOR 4.*
"Enzo," Alessandro’s voice instantly reverted to cold steel. He stepped back, cycling the slide of his own weapon. "He found the safe house."
"How?" Isabella asked, panic threatening to claw its way back into her chest. "You said this place was off the grid."
"There is a traitor in my high council," Alessandro said darkly. "Stay behind me."
They ascended to the main hall just as the heavy oak doors were blown inward by explosive charges. Wood splinters and black smoke filled the vaulted chamber. A dozen heavily armed mercenaries poured into the foyer, automatic weapons blazing, chewing through the priceless artwork and antique furniture.
Alessandro moved with terrifying, mechanical lethality. He dragged Isabella behind a massive marble pillar, returning fire with lethal accuracy, dropping two men before they could clear the doorway.
"Up the stairs, to the vault!" he shouted over the deafening roar of gunfire.
"I'm not leaving you!" Isabella screamed back, raising her 9mm and firing three controlled shots, striking a mercenary who was flanking them from the eastern colonnade. The man collapsed with a groan.
Alessandro glanced at her, a savage, prideful grin cutting across his features even in the face of death. "Remind me never to make you angry, wife."
Suddenly, from the upper balcony, a sniper appeared, aiming a high-caliber rifle directly at Isabella’s exposed flank.
"Isabella, down!"
Alessandro didn't think. He didn't calculate odds. The most calculating, ruthless mob boss on the continent threw his entire body over hers, tackling her to the hardwood floor just as a deafening blast tore through the room.
A sickening *thud* echoed in Isabella’s ears.
A wet, hot spray splattered across her face.
Alessandro groaned—a sound of deep, guttural agony she had never heard from him before. He collapsed on top of her, his immense weight pinning her to the ground.
"Alessandro!" she screamed.
May you like
Her trembling hands reached around his back, and when she pulled them away, her fingers were drenched in thick, crimson blood.
